'up to Nvidia to let AMD users enjoy PhysX hair and fur effects'

MS should be on the ball here, and incorporate the best tech into DX.
That is the only way to stop this proprietary crap.

Going by what nvidia has done on the past, they usually cripple everything that isn't on their hardware, no matter if the other hardware can do it as fast, or faster than nvidia's hardware.

Our dear friends over at PCGamesHardware had an interesting interview with CD Projekt RED’s lead engine developer, Balázs Török, in which Balázs claimed that AMD users will be able to enjoy the new fur and hair PhysX effects, provided Nvidia lets them to.

When asked about the new PhysX effects, Balázs said that – at this moment – these aforementioned effects run on AMD Radeon GPUs.

“At the moment it works, but if it can run at the end, the decision of Nvidia. What matters is the direction in which they continue to develop the technology and whether and what barriers they are installed. But I think it will also run on Radeon graphics cards.“

Moreover, Balázs claimed that CD Projekt RED is using a more polished version of the fur tech than the one used in Call of Duty: Ghosts. This means that the team will use a more advanced version of the fur tech which will result in better performance, and might look prettier. And as Balázs said, there would be more than one animals on screen with this new fur effect.

Note: That isn't saying that Physx can run on AMD or that the game using Physx as the physics engine can produce the same effects on AMD hardware. What that means is that there is nothing to prevent the Physics effects that run under Physx (and as a result only for Nvidia hardware) from being written in such a way that AMD cards can do it do. TressFX was an example of a physics effect that worked on both venders.

Basically the effects they are doing can be done outside Physx but it's not up to them to do it since Nvidia has a hand in there. In one form or another.

I will definitely buy W3 on launch, regardless of whether PhysX will run on AMD hardware, which I doubt nVidia will allow BTW. Need to support PC devs like this.

Absolutely agree! I will upgrade my 7870, but PhysX will not be the sole criteria. As for Nvidia vs AMD, I'll see what's what this summer...hopefully the mining craze will have abated by then.

"Mining Tax" sure does hurt right now for people looking to upgrade.
