I have almost everything for my new comp. I was going to pair a 1.2gig tbird w/ a geforce2 pro. Now I'm wondering if I should go with what's in the title of this thread instead. I'm curious to know if the duron would hold the ultra back.

My new computer is going to be only for gaming.

What do you think?

depends on your game. UT is more processor dependent than the speed of your video card, as the engine isn't as new... but Q3 is more video card dependent... Anand even mentioned that at the higher resolutions, the only differentiating factor seems to be which card you're running... so an ultra will do you lots in Q3, while in UT it might be your Duron that would hold you back first.

I saw this and had to straiten you out a little.
In resolutions at or above 1078 * 768 at 32 bit the processor above 700mhz will not be your bottleneck
period!
And even if you play at lowere rez. (Why would you?)
Current video cards are the bottleneck after 800 mhz, so basically you should go for the most powerful video card you can afford.
At this point cpus are gettin faster and faster and bandwidth(memory) is whats keepin these cards from there ptential.
If you do research you will find the same things i have told you.
Example-go to any benchmark page and you will find that in every situation once you go above 1078 * 768 all the numbers even out(fps) what that means is that the proceesor is waiting for the vid card to do its thing which means video card limited.
Hope this helps.
Sorry if a bit confusing had to rush im at work.

Personally, I'd go for the Tbird and the Pro, which you'll be overclock to pretty much near Ultra levels anyway...

Yes at high resolutions (1024x768, though 1280x1024+ is more noticeably) there is very little difference in fps. At 1280x1024, my celeron 550mhz probably gets within 2fps of a Athlon 800.

But snow patrol brings up a good point, a Tbird + pro would be good.
