posting in OT because this is more of a rant topic than a "chose my hardware" topic.

yesterday i unplugged the DVI cable of my PC while the PC was running and i must have shorted out something because the monitor went black and it refused to work afterwards.

if i unplug the video card, the monitor cycles through the basic colors, but if i plug the DVI into the motherboard DVI socket, i still get no image. still, i could have royally screwed up because i'm pretty sure i turned off the onboard gpu in BIOS. so i panicked and i bought a new monitor, AOC 27" 144hz TN 1ms !

pretty decent for £275 shipped, although i wanted to save some more and buy a 120Hz IPS.

my current monitor is/was a hannspree 23" that i bought in 2010 because my viewsonic died, i paid £95 for it and was never a great monitor. i needed to run a calibration app that killed the gamma otherwise it was impossible to make out any details, and playing Quake on it was pain and suffering.

on top of the £275, i'm now looking at a serious possibility that my GTX 770 broke (it still spins), and while my monitor does support Freesync, it seems all the RX570 are being sold at a ridiculous price right now, and the benchmarks over my 770 aren't really impressive.

there wasn't a worst time to upgrade. i'm so bummed out about being forced to buy a new monitor that isn't what i wanted, because i wanted a proper 2560x1440 IPS 120hz 27", i just wanted to wait for the ridiculous price of over-a-thousand-pounds to come down.

same for the GPU, i really didn't want to update it until my 770 was not doing its job anymore. hopefully, i won't have to, and looking at the prices for AMD cards is making me feel ill.

And to top it all off, i'm on the waiting list for a Topre !!!

jesus .. i was so happy i had £1300 saved .. half of it is already gone.

AND THIS WHOLE THING STARTED because i wanted to replace the Logitech 2.1 system i have, which although it works, it can sometimes only play outof 1 speaker (it does this and then goes back to working flawlessly for months), i splurged on a $50 new logitech while my brain was telling me DO NOT BUY IT YOU DO NOT NEED IT and because the cable was tangled with the DVI and i did not want to cut the old speaker cable, i unscrewed the DVI .. and bam!

£275 = $383 shipped, in traitor money.

i spend nothing on anything else, the only thing i do to not kill myself is play quake and blacklight, i think it's a pretty solid investment when any other monitor is £100 minimum.

Sorry, didn't mean to pick on you too bad, I've been tinkering with PCs and such since the 90s, and even if it's ancient and slow, I always keep at least 1 older full system around ... Had just assumed it was standard practice around the world ....

i did use to keep spare parts and would have had a 7750 just to check if the monitor was still ok, but i had to change house a dozen times, and eventually i could not continue carrying around a bag full of cables, screws and spare parts so i finally had to throw it out.

honestly, i was going to change the monitor anyway, but i was hoping to make the jump to IPS + 120/144hz, but the prices, man, they are insane.
£400 for a 23"
£700+ for a 27"

this is assuming you aren't even looking to get that sweg sweet monitor from a gaming brand with GSync and all that, because if you do you're well over £1k. UK prices are not the same as US prices, also we earn less, and when it comes to technology we're pretty much screwed. I take home about $1700 every four weeks, and while i get free healthcare and the cost of living is fairly low, you basically pay half what i do for computer parts.

also, i respect Hannspree for being able, in 2010, to sell me a 23" monitor for less than £100, when 2 years earlier my Viewsonic 20" was £260, but it was not a good monitor.

I usually just use cheap $100 21.5 inch 1080p monitors ....
That said I do keep a dedicated HT room in the basement with a front projection setup .... so I have spent "too much $$$" on my Sony Projector

This one time a home intruder broke in and forced me to upgrade my video card at gunpoint ... among other things.
It was a Radeon 4500.

Is this one of those deeper meaning snitch rants or are you really having a problem with your computer ?

None here. To live in my house, crap has to be useful or it's gone*.

*Cats and rocks are exempted.
One extra PC and one extra monitor is useful for testing & troubleshooting.

I do agree that having a bin full of old NE2000 cards and SCSI hardware is useless though .. I should get rid of some ancient crap ....

Glad you got new monitor and that your GPU is ok! Probably somewhere in the GPU control center you can set the refresh rate ... though it likely will be nested option somewhere

it needs the monitor drivers, then it's in the windows display utility.

i gotta say, for the money, it's a very nice monitor.
