I am running Windows xp(sp2) on my computer(amd64 3000+,asus a8n-e mobo,6600gt gpu,512mb ram 200gb sata hdd). The problem started yesterday when my computer started with automatically starting scandisk for the drive e:,even then when i shut downed the pc properly. And since then when ever i am restarting the computer it automatically starts with scanning the E: drive.i ran the thorough scandisk and also ran a reputed antivirus software for this drive, nothing found wrong on these test. What is the problem & how can i fix it???

Check your system event viewer (Eventvwr). See if there are reports of disk issues. You may be having problems and not gotten a popup on it. Usually, scandisk is launched when the bit is set to run it or the "dirty bit" is on.

Generally that's the sign of a disk problem, as gsellis said check eventviewer and see if there's any indication that Windows is having problems with your drive.

XP does not use Scandisk. If you are running with NTFS, an improper shutdown does not auto run CHKDSK (XP's disk checker.) This is confusing. ???

The partition system is deffinately NTFS.It may be possible that it happened because of improper shutdown due to some Voltage fluctuation but what should be the cure????

So there were no entries in the event viewer?
