unwanted reboot problem

hey first post

i'm running WinXP on a p4 1.6a @ 2.3 Ghz with an Asus P4S533 mobo and 256 MB of samsung PC2700
ddr ram. my system has been running fine for several months, but i began experiencing problems as soon
as i got to school. i would get random reboots every now and again, and also problems with my cd
burner (nero would irrecoverably crash every time i tried to burn anything, even after uninstalling/reinstalling..
this is after nero working fine for months). i began to suspect that my school's shoddy electrical supply was
the culprit, however now i'm not so sure if that's my problem, or if perhaps this has caused other problems
for me. perhaps i should also mention i was using the wire trick to up my core voltage, however i removed it
and clocked my cpu back to stock when i started having problems. this did not help.

now my computer won't even boot. it makes it to right where the WinXP logo appears and then resets, never
getting any further. if i try booting to safe mode, i can see it loading drivers, right after it finishes mpegport.sys
(i know it is not a problem with this particular file however), i.e. after it finishes loading drivers, it reboots. the
only way for me to get to a DOS prompt is a boot disk. when in DOS after using a boot disk my computer works
fine however and does not reboot. of course this is under DOS only. i've tried throwing a blank hard disk in
and reinstalling Win98 (i only have an upgrade cd for xp), however my computer reboots every time either immediately
after beggining to copy files or at the previous step. so basically, i can't get in to any of my 32bit os's and i can't
reinstall any of them either. grr! also, i've noticed when i enter my BIOS my core voltage fluctuates a lot (way more
than it should). for instance, when i load defaults and the core voltage is set to .5 and i check under the power
management menu, it is jumping between .68 and .71. is this a problem with my cpu, motherboard, memory, what??
any ideas? did i burn out my cpu running its core at .75 for 4 or 5 months? seems a little fast to me. i've alread tried
buying a new powersupply unit and that did not fix it, however it did fix my problem of AGP not initializing on a cold boot.
my only idea i have now is that perhaps i burnt out my CPU and one of the modes does not work, like it chokes when
trying to switch to real mode or protected mode or something. i don't know a whole lot about that so i don't really know
if that even makes sense. anyways, i'm going home to run memtest86 and see what it says about my RAM, and i'll check
back later to see if anyone has any ideas. hopefully someone can help me with problem this is driving me nuts!!!

THANKS!!!!!

ps sorry this is so damned long it's just i've already tried a lot of things to fix this and wanted to keep the rendundancy to
a minimum

Did this happen after a physical move of the computer? Sounds like it. I suggest that when you try and load Win98 that you take out all peripherals except vid card. Also just so you know you can boot and install XP upgrade it will simply prompt you for the license code you had for Windows 98.
good luck

yes this started to happen after a physical move
of the computer. i have tried removing all
peripherals, it did not have any effect unfortunately.
i already bought a new 350w power supply to see if
that was the problem and it did not fix anything.
memtest86 runs perfectly on my computer after 4 passes
then i got bored watching it run... i don't think it's
my memory. which means i guess either my CPU or mobo.
i think i'm leaning towards my CPU unfortunately.. doh.
well if anyone has any fresh ideas i would still greatly
appreciate. thanks.
