Unwanted "Found New Hardware" in Win 98SE

Everytime I boot up in W98SE, I get a "Found New Hareware Message". I says it found a PCI Mass storage controller and requests the drivers for it. The only things I have done was to remove a scsi card for a CD-R I removed which I burned files/music with EZ-CD creator/Direct CD (adaptec). Now I have deleted and uninstalled the devices in windows, have made sure of that "scsi" is not in my boot up sequence in bios and have run out of ideas. Yet I still get : "Found New Hareware Message".

Help!!

Thanks in advance,

click (windows button + pause) to get you to device manager

Click on the problematic hardware... most likely it will be the one with yellow question mark.

right click, properties, check disable this device, reboot

you're done

Did the scsi card come with the machine or did you install it? You didn't by chance move a card into that slot when you removed the scsi card did you? What is device manager telling you? Are there conflicts? Could you give us a little more info on your system?

I installed the scsi. It is an adaptec 2902I. It came with a Panasonic SCSI burner. It is very possible I did move a card into that slot because I swapped to the above listed mobo about a week after.

Should I try the reshullfing pci cards method? Will that dom the trick?
Or is PCI steering in Win98SE the culprit.

Thanks for all you help in advance.

Win98 did the thing to me forever with a modem. The only way I was able to fix it was to reformat and re-install. (When I get really frustrated, I bring out the big guns.) I wouldn't recommend this course of action unless you have no other alternative (I still don't have all my programs back). Try installing 98SE again. It will replace all 98SE system files while leaving your applications alone. In theory the 98SE install should detect everything as it is supposed to be.

Edit: Qualified last sentence to say that the 98SE install, not 98SE should detect everything as it ought to be.

I appreciate the advice but I really don't want to format and re-install.

Would a re-install of Win98SE clean all that up and keep my programs in tact?

I would delete all the components under device manager related to plug & pray, reboot and the system will redetect everything in your system. This may require reloading several drivers, but it will also solve unassociated "floating" irq's in the registry.
