It's not just dogs, many mammals have that gag reflex. Anyways, just punch the dog in the nose. It seems kind of hard to reach behind a big dog and try to finger it.

I've been attacked twice by dogs and the nose strike works the best. Once I saw the dog coming and I kicked him square in the nose before he got to me...the poor guy just whimpered away. The most serious time was a german shepherd that caught me by surprise and knocked me down. I covered my face and throat until I rolled into a better position...then I punched him twice in the face and he ran away.

My HS Chem teacher claimed to have killed an attacking dog by grabbing its jaws and forcing them open.

This is why I own an Akita, if any dog attempts to even try to attack us, it's ripped to shred in a matter of seconds. Bear hunting dogs make great pets. :)

according to a former teacher of mine who was also a cop, you're supposed to grab and pick up the dog by the fur around its neck, then spin in a circle while kicking the dog in the stomach.

Sure, that would work - if you're Batman.

ROFL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But on a serious note, if a dog is running to attack you, just sit down. The dog will think you are picking up something from the ground to hit it with.

Damn, I wish I knew that trick the other day!

I got out of my car at my brother's, and started getting tools out of the trunk. All of a sudden I heard dogs barking. I looked up and saw these three monsters screaming across the yards from two doors down. They all looked and sounded like they were ready to kill! Don't know what they were so pissed off about, but I sure didn't want to stick around and find out. Fortunately, they pulled up short and headed back to their own turf. I snapped this picture of the most vicious one, as he turned to bark at me one last time. Whew! :Q

he's both:p

seriously, it wouldnt be that hard with a small to medium sized dog... but you obviously wouldnt be able to do it with something like say a doberman...
