I have been getting usual temp reading from OCCT (Overclock checking tool) and speed fan for the CPU. While the my Asus MB's tool report normal temps for the CPU. All of them report the core temp in normal range.

OCCT was reporting up to 127C while speed fan varies from 86C to -45C. Asus tool reports CPU around 30C. The core temp are also reported around 30C on all of the tools. Here a link to the screenshot with temps highlighted in green:

Any ideas what is going on? I am assuming the reading are messed up and its safe to use my CPU and run some prime95 testing.

Same is happening with me, i have i5 2500 with asus mobo, i have done some research and found that asus mobo messes up the temp reading while using speed fan, in my bios it shows stable 29c-30c and in speed fan it shows 85c constant, i tried using hw monitor it also shows 85c-90c. you should not worry about that, as if you take a look at your core temps they will be stable at 35c-40c or may be less.

So your chips is not heating up, its just the asus mobo messes up the readings. relax and have fun with your new chip!!

download real temp software and check the core temps. if the core temps are fine then your doing just fine!!

OCCT and SpeedFan shows readings that are way beyond any CPU could achieve at near 0% load. OCCT could be thinking that you're living in a desert and SpeedFan is thinking that you're living in the North Pole.

I would trust the reading that is from Asus as the temps are well in line with the motherboard temp readings. Try HWMonitor and post a screenshot.

I've heard of CPUTIN errors when coming out of sleep, could this be the case?

I have no issue with occt temps and my Asus board in sig. I use realtemp to monitor temps. Both read similar for me.

Do you have any unknown devices in device manager still?

It reassuring to know some other people have the same issues. I tried using HWMonitor and it has same high temp readings for CPUTIN:

I don't have any known devices in my device manager, all the drivers should be installed now. I have an Asus P8Z68-V LX and doing some searching gives few hits on wrong temp already, like this one:

Something must be weird with my Asus MB.

Use realtemp. My asus mobo reports temps that are whacked.

For example we all know the TJMax of the 2600K is 98°C. It's easy to throttle your chip, just disable the fan and run some LinX. Then watch CPUz for the reported clockspeed and multiplier.

On my MIVE-Z, realtemp correctly reports the temperature reaching 98°C right at the same time the CPU starts throttling. But the ASUS probe temp reports is goofy, around 80°C.

As best I can tell, on my MIVE-Z the reported CPU temp in the ASUS software is actually a thermocouple probe positioned on the mobo in the socket and is really reporting the socket temperature (a poor man's Tcase if you will).

Throttling doesn't hurt your CPU, just hurts performance. Its easy to verify your CPU is throttling, and easy to cross-check the reported temps to see if it matches up.

I trust realtemp.
