Unusual request - how to preserve a CPU?

I'm going to upgrade my aging Athlon 1GHz after Christmas (new student loan cheque - wahey!) but it's an AXIA Y that took me ages to locate and I want to preserve it - I'm the sort of guy who has motherboards glued to his wall rather than art. I'd like to frame it in some way and hang it up but ideally I'd like whatever method I use not to damage the CPU, so in theory, motherboards permitting, I could take it down again in 20 years time and it'll still boot up.

Any ideas?

you know the underlay the motherboards come in, put that under where the pins are (or something a bit more stiff if you can find it, also something that wont hold a static charge) and stick it in a box like thing with a glass cover (you could see if you can find one, ormaybe just make one)

hmm, I've seen a show, called Game Odysee, anyway, they tried to preserve old hall games (?), you know these old big casino slot game like boxes, where you could play games like Tron and whatever. But that seems to be impossible, running the mashines ruins the "computer", but even if it is switched off it won't stay ok forever.

prety sure that is different kadajawi, roms degrade over time but i bet hampionAtTufshop's sugestion will work fine for a cpu.

hmm, indeed, but then they could simply take the ROM, make a mirror of it and whenever neccessary just flash it (or put in another ROM). But what about rust?

ya, you can replace the rom but proper chips can be hard to comeby. at least that is from what i understand, had an only roommate that collected arcade units. also running a chip doesnt destroy it, at least not to the extent that turning the thing on and off does.

Static Bag with a packet of dissecant and then seal it shut. Should make it 50 years, no problem.

Hmm... I'm sure that would work but it's not exactly artistic to hang up a static bag. I wonder if I could press it into a bed of silicone - if the pins are protected and the core is already covered, that should do the trick, right?

and I thought I had seen it all until today.......

Its a weird thing to do.... perhaps make you're own Funeral Ceremony and mount the deceased for people willing to have it done.

hmm i should really stop studying Business Studies.

Heh, I've been thinking of doing the same!! I too have the 1Ghz AXIA 'Y'!

It was such a legend at the time of purchase and does me great service each day that to see it go in the bin, or even to some gipper who wouldn't appreciate the significance of this proc, just fills me with dread.

Someone else suggested that I send the little ah heck out in a blaze of glory - something suitably comic for posting to forums. This is quite an appealing idea - what do you think would be an appropriate death? Maybe I could try and solder it to a P4 board...

you might damage much more hardware by doing that (vid card, mobo, psu, ram etc.). And then I'd say its a waste... I'd even collect 486 😀 No... I'd suggest to build a vitrine for it... where you can put in old hardware. You can always look at it, remember the old times etc. 😀 Or simply let the CPU work on Seti@Home, Folding@Home, Distributed Folding, D2OL, Muon or one of the other DC projects. Our Team Anandtech Team needs every CPU cycle possible 😀

Yeah - have to agree - a blaze of glory is great, but just running at normal speeds without a HS on would kill it almost instantly and I can't risk damaging the rest of my rig. And what on earth is a vitrine???

DON'T KILL IT, Pulllllleeeeeze!

I'll buy it off you rather than see that!!! I'm in the UK so think about it...

The second system/Seti cruncher Idea is fitting I think.

Sorry matey - she's my little pride and joy - been running at a steady 40% overclock since I bought her - I just could part with her, even for another brit...

Why won't it run @1.5 or above? Mine does....

hmm, so vitrine is not a english word... damn 😀 Uhm, a vitrine is something like a big glass box, like in the museum, where you can put something in and look at it... maybe put a sticker below saying "Athlon 1000 AXIA @ 1.4 GHz"

I used to run it at 1500MHz but my cooling isn't great (I use my PC mainly for audio work so noise is an important factor) and hence stability wasn't all that great - I only dropped it down a smidge for that reason.
