OK friends, here is one to scratch ur brain over (i'v almost pulled my hair out in frustration)

Goal was to try and get to 3Ghz with my Q6600, before i get into what happened, here is a low down on my system specs:

Processor: Intel Quad Q6600 (G0 Stepping) with retail Intel Heatsink
Mobos: GIgabyte P35 DS3R & DQ6 (read detail down)
Ram: 2*1GB Crucial Ballistix PC 8500 (1066 Mem Speed)
Graphic Card: Xpert Vision Radeon HD2400 Pro (I know.. this machine is for audio production, no games)
Power Supply: Cooler Master Real Power 550W

I first got the machine with the P35 DS3R and succesfully had it running at 2.99Ghz (333 FSB) for the first week without much difficulty and the system was stable through some Prime95 tests and some other test apps. Then I had some power issues around my area and my system started acting up, my RAID configuration crashed on me, so a complete re-install was needed and my machine would now not go past FSB280 (2.5 Ghz) no matter what i try it wouldnt!

I thought it might be due to a corrupt BIOS and had my MB checked, the service center did confirm a possible corruption with the MB and since they didnt have stock of DS3R (it was only 15 days since i bought it) they replaced it with a DQ6 (i know, lucky me). SO now i thought, i should be able to get back to my 3Ghz, but with no luck!! I'm still stuck at the same 280FSB!! and whats worse is that I tried a friends B3 stepping Q6600 on my machine and even that wouldnt go past FSB 280!

What I cant understand is how come I was able to run at 3Ghz the first week and then now I just cant seem to get the exact same CPU to run at those speeds irrespective of the Mobo?

This is just sooo frustrating and I would really appreciate you guys offering some help to try and track down the issue...

Thanks!

maybe u have a power suply issue. Try with another power supply. At the moment it's all I can think off ... it's verry early 2 me ... just wowked up . Also test your memories with memtest to be sure they're ok .

Tested the memory and the entire system extensively, without any noticeable issues.... now thats what making this even more frustrating that the issue doesnt seem as apparent...

If the power supply is an issue then the machine with its current setup should also give me stability issues or any other problems, but thats not the case...

Tried putting your PSU into your friends pc and see if it works with your processor for eg at 3GHz? or mix and match around with his parts till you find the weak link. Guessin' summt got fried in the power problems..?

Now here is where it gets complicated... I created a stress test using an audio appz with a shit load of plugins and tracks etc... maxing out CPU usage, very heavy use of RAM and also HD usage. Basically pushing the entire system on max... and I ran this for over 8 hours and am yet to crash it. So it seems like in its current setup its rock solid. If there was an issue with the power supply, i surely wouldnt be able to run my entire system on max usage continuously right?

And its not just any PSU its the new Real Power series Cooler Master series, so I doubt its gonna start giving issues over a few minor power problems. And based on how i'm stress testing the system now... no evident failure yet...

not so. I have a system that was OK at a lower OC, but would re-boot on my DQ6-. I replaced the Antec 550 with a Seasonic S12 550, and now its been 2 days, no problem (@3.5) So PSU is a likely suspect.

Power supplies act VERY strange when something is wrong. they can just poof out, or send weird volts thru your system. just consider it could be the power supply. I had a bad corsair 520w on my last comp, I could run the comp all day but you could surely here the fans loosing power, then gaining power. Just consider it.
