Unused Vacation Days and Quitting?

Are your paid vacation days a "privelage" to be used only when you are working for a company, or should you be able to collect on them if you leave your job?

I think after putting in your due time, it's only fair to get paid for the unused days...cause otherwise you could have just used them and then quit. Friend is leaving and got told they can't pay her for these 18 days! 😕

Well, it's really up to the companies policies, but I agree, it's only fair to be paid those days if they are unused and you end up leaving that company.

My company will allow us to accrue like up to 15 or 20 vacation days and if it goes beyond that, they just pay us for anything beyond 20 days.

Also, if we quit or leave the company, we will be paid for any unused vacation days.
 
Unfortunatly life isn't fair.
That's why you time your separation from the company properly so you can use your vacation days.
 
Some state governments and other governments will guarantee time due to you. Most private biz will not pay it though if you quit. Rules for quitting:

Plan your vacation.
Take it.
Come back from vacation.
Know how many sick days you have due.
Call in - follow company policy.
Use your sick days/personal days.
THEN
Give notice.
Work your last 2.
Bye.
 
Most companies pay you for unused vacation days. I'm suprised they are being so firm about not being able to pay her. She needs to read the company policy to find out.

Yeah, as if dicking your employee over isn't already a burning bridge? If have a friendly boss, then talk to them about it. Where I work we routinely pay employees for unused vacation. If you have a jerk boss, then take a nice vacation and then quit. If they bitch, tell them you learned about the job while on vacation.
 
My company's policy specifically says unpaid vacation payout is at the discretion of the CEO. I'd be sure to use up most of my vacation before giving notice.
 
At my first job out of college I had paid vacation days and tons of comp time saved-up. I was able to claim both and get paid as part of quitting (to go to grad school, so I quit under friendly circumstances).
