Apparently the famous online betting/prediction site Intrade has shut down under mysterious circumstances. This probably won't shock most people; concern about these sorts of situations have been part of the criticism of these sites for a long time.
What's interesting is that many lamenting the loss are not gamblers. Intrade had a wide following because it allowed betting not just on traditional events like the outcome of sports, but also social and political issues. The site was widely seen as a very interesting and often accurate way of assessing public mood, and was used often by researchers.
The story I heard on NPR ended with a clever joke about how sad Intrade regulars will be that they can't use the site to bet on whether or not Intrade will ever be back in business.
