Untethered iPhone 4S/iPad 2 jailbreak Now Available

Actually it took a long time to find a hack for A5 ... They will certainly find a hack for whatever comes next because product development cycles force teams to miss minor bugs

it didnt take long at all. It just wasn't a public JB.

I just JB my sprint 4s, things still need to be ironed out with ios 5 it seems.

The worst part as it is, is that the hack is purely software. This isn't like Limera1n for the A4 where they found a fundamental BootROM exploit that can be used as a springboard, which means they're back to square one with iOS 5.1. Apple has really done their homework here; unlike the S5L8900 (iPhone/iPhone 3G) and S5L8920 (iPhone 3GS), there hasn't been a completely exploitable BootROM vulnerability discovered for the A4 or the A5.

They also finally released the windows version of the jalbreak. (not the CLI one) Finally have 3b unrestricter and sbsettings all I really care about.

Does anyone know of a free (or cheaper >$10) tethering app for jailbroken IPhones? The only one I know about is $20! I don't wanna pay that much knowing that it could be taken away. (the jailbreak)

Isn't TetherMe still only $0.99?

Works great for me so far. Was able to log into Cydia and install MyWi and other apps I'd purchased. The wait was long and agonizing, but I'm glad I can finally tether again.

I would just pay the $20 for MyWi - you just pay once and well worth it when you need it. I first bought it about 2 years ago on my 3GS, and it transfered over to my 4S just fine.

So seeing as how the JB is software (and it's works great BTW) like ViRGE indicates. How can I now disable any updates so when 5.1 comes I don't get stuck with it.

iTunes will notify you of any new updates. It won't update on its own.

I think he's talking about the over-the-air update feature. I believe you can disable that in the settings. And if I'm not mistaken, the jailbreak turns it off by default.

Ahh yes, OTA. Correct, the jailbreak is supposed to disable it (as I recall, Apple actually does a sanity check and won't update jailbroken devices).

According to the absinthe guides on Modmyi and other sites they suggest doing a full system wipe/erase then doing the jailbreak then doing a restore to get your data/settings back how you want them.

I made a iCloud backup yesterday before doing the JB and since there's no way to kick off a iCloud restore other than doing a "Erase all settings and data" option from the device directly (at least I cannot find a way to manually kick off a iCloud restore), that is what I did.

After doing the JB and then doing the erase reset and restoring from iCloud I got everything back how I had it prior to starting this AND Cydia still showed up. But it would not launch for anything.

Granted, I did not even try launching it after doing the JB but before doing the iCloud restore.

So this morning I did a full restore via iTunes that downloads the ipsw direct from Apple and puts it back to factory and gets rid of the JB.

I think did the JB again, this time I launched Cydia and confirmed it worked.

Then went to settings on the phone and did a Erase and rest all again but it just got stuck at a spinning circle in the middle of the screen.

Did power plus home button and forced a reboot and it booted back up like I hadn't hit the erase all and restore option.

Cannot get past that so I'm yet again doing a factory restore via iTunes and about to give up.

Anyone else run into this? I need to do my iCloud restore after the JB. Maybe I'll just JB without doing the Erase prior to see how that goes.

The guides recommended against that though.

When I JB my iPad 1 I backed up my device through iTunes, did a restore (wiped all data), then a JB, and finally I restored from backup on iTunes (not to be confused with restore to factory settings.)

Did you try this?

Nope, not yet since I don't want to sync it with the computer I'm doing the JB from.

Really want to do the restore from a specific iCloud backup.

I was able to do another factory restore from iTunes and then did the iCloud restore for the desired backup point. It's installing all the apps and settings which takes forever. Once that's done I'll try doing the JB as is with apps and all.
