Unsymmetrical RAM installations affect speed/performance?

If I purchase a laptop with 256mb and one empty memory slot and later add in a 512mb stick, would the unsymmetrical memories (256 and 512) affect performance due to size difference?

i.e. if both system have equal RAM but one is split evenly while another is split unsymmetrically, would the evenly split system be faster than one that is not?
