My GF has been running Kerio Personal Firewall for several years (under XP Pro SP2). I prefer ZoneAlarm myself, but she was having some compatibility issues so I suggested she try Kerio. It served its purpose, but she was never really comfortable with the hyper-vigilance of Kerio.
Recently we switched from Earthlink DSL to Comcast Cable, and as part of the service Comcast offers a free subcription to McAfee Firewall and Antivirus. She decided to give it a try. Following the directions on Comcast's website, she first disabled and uninstalled Kerio, then rebooted.
Upon reboot, immediately appeared the error message "The System Has Recovered from a Serious Error" with the option to "Send to Microsoft" or "Don't Send". Either way, the message reappears instantly. You click "Don't Send" and it pops right back up. Finally I was able to disable it temporarily for her by terminating both "Dumprep" and "Drwtsn" processes in Task Manager. However, upon reboot the error messages start up again.
She continued with the install of McAfee Firewall, which works great, but the error messages are still occuring. I Googled the error and most of what I found refers to a problem with SP1 (she is running SP2) or an issue with the page file. I tried the commonly recommended workaround of disabling the page file completely and then re-creating it, but this had no effect on the error messages. I also checked the Event Log, but I could find no useful information -- just some binary code, and a link to Microsoft support, which also identifies the error as the above-mentioned issue with the page file. Since the workaround doesn't work, I don't believe the page file is the issue.
