Unstable K7V (UPDATE: incompatable viper 770?)

I have a Tbird 800 and an Asus K7V. I know the Tbirds aren't supposed to work with the KX133, but it seems to work for everyone on the K7V. Anyway, mine doesn't really work right. It won't finish booting at 800 MHz, it only boots if I raise to bus speed to 103 or 105 @ 1.8v. And then it is terribly unstable. Is there anything I can do to make this more stable? Or is this just because of the Tbird, meaning that there is nothing I can do?

I was under the impression that only the 700 and lower tbirds worked on the k7v. of course i could be wrong.

Fenix793 that is also what I read ,his best bet is to swap it for a Athlon classic 800mhz cpu.

I was using the 1007_02c but it was very unstable. I also have the 1006 and the 1007_02b, I'll try going back to 1006 and see if that helps. As to the first two replies, I had read that, but then if you goto the AMDZone forum on this, http://amdzone.pcstats.com/messageview.cfm?catid=19&threadid=16819 almost everyone with the K7V has no problems, no matter what the speed. I dunno....if worst comes to worst does anyone know if TCWO will exchange the TBird for a classic?

Deeko,

While speed is an issue, manufacturing week (maybe even FAB) also plays a part. AMDZONE has several threads. I have also seen posts at a German site regarding week numbers. The problem with timing and the TBIRD gets down to pico-seconds, I'm sure that individual component tolerance could effect this.

I have the latest BIOS, it is a little better but it still freezes in really CPU intensive things, like bleem and UT and DVD decoding. Hmm....so maybe I just got one of the ones that don't work well with the KX133? That sucks....if I can't get it stable, does anyone know if TCWO will allow me to exchange it for a classic?

Ok, I saw what DaddyG said so I switched my Diamond Viper 770 ultra with my old Viper 330. Now it works! I played some FF8 via bleem in software mode(very CPU intensive), and played a couple matches of UT(D3D wouldn't work, but I think that's the Viper 330's fault.) without a crash. Could that have been the problem? I was planning on upgrading to a Voodoo5 soon anyway....is there any way of knowing if it will work, or do I just have to give it a try and hope for the best?

That's odd... Try changing some of the AGP settings. Try turning of AGP 4x, make sure fast writes are off, and mess with all the other settings.

Hmm....that didn't work either....I think I'm just gonna try to replace it with a classic.

Deeko,

JonnyGuru, can probably answer your question regarding TCWO RMA'ing your CPU.
