Unstable connection at 100mbps, but solid at 10...

This computer I am working on is giving some weird issue I have never seen before. It will say connected for a second or so, then disconnected, rinse and repeat over and over until it achieves a solid connection, but it will only be connected at 10 mbps.

I'm guessing there is some sort of compatibility issue at 100 mbps. I changed the ethernet cable which didn't work and now I'm wondering if it has something to do with where it is patched into the switch.

Before I start messing with that I was wondering if this is some sort of common, local issue with a typical remedy.

Installing latest drivers didn't help nor did using windows network repair option.

Any help would be fantastic, thank you!

What kinda switch? Is this at home or a business? Have you tried other ports? How do other PCs behave? Are the patch cords you are using factory or hand made?

You can try disabling autonegotiate on your PC and see if that helps.

Is this a homemade cable? Use only purchased patch cables. Also make sure to always leave your switch and NIC set to autonegotiate speed/duplex.

-edit-
You have a cabling problem.

It's a business switch. The company I am at probably has a few hundred PC's. I haven't tried other ports yet because where she is located there is a temporary wall (cubicle style)against the main wall that completely prevents me from seeing where it is plugged in without having to get between the walls (which would likely be a day project, brilliant design, I know). So it's just a cable the peaks through the bottom of the temporary wall... If I could find where the cable is plugged in, it would be labeled so I can find it in the switch room, however I don't have that "luxury" at the moment.

I took a tablet over there and it did the exact same thing. In the mean time, is there a way I can just tell Windows to only connect at 10mbps so she can at least work?

Alright I will look into it... this ain't gonna be fun haha.

Anyhow thank you very much for your fast responses!

Mark this one as solved. It turns out the switch was indeed configured weirdly. I found a map that pointed out which port she was in, we moved her to a different port and she connected at 100 mbps without an issue instantly.

Thank you again!!

Sounds like a speed/duplex issue. We have our workstations hard set to 100/Full. If a port gets set to auto, the two argue and never seem to reach "agreement" on the link speed and duplex. It seems easier to negotiate slower speeds usually, which might explain why she could sometimes work at 10. I'd bet that if you change the config of that port to either auto or whatever defined speed you like, and set the NIC the same, you shouldn't have an issue.
