Hey guys,

I once again find myself with a strange problem and I just cant find the answer. I have windows 10 on a friends 6 month old lenovo 110 laptop. I believe it may of failed a cumulative update but, Basic problem is that I cant connect to the internet. A symptom or cause may be dhcp or dns related. The PC will not connect and grab a dhcp address from any network. I am able to put the network info in manually, and resolve the network, but I still have no network access or connection. It shows connected to the network, but when Pinging my router I get a general failure error. IT shows connected via wifi and ethernet, but pings to anything fail. I cant even get loopback pings to work.

list of things Ive tried.

dnsflush
netsh resets
driver rollbacks, deletes, multiple version installs
tethering with usb from phone to confirm not an adapter hardware problem
chipset updates
bios updates
windows firewall...on, off, restarted, disabled, ....you name it.. i tried it.
every trouble shooter windows 10 has to offer.
and about 30 different guides on google.

I just cant find the problem here. I am starting to think clean install may be my only option but before I get there, Im hoping there is something else I can try.. something lower level. is it possible to completel restore the DNS and DHCP services?

Yes. all that and bout 1000 other things. :D I think I have hit every windows 10 internet problem guide on the interwebs!

The only thing I haven't tried is the fix-it, but Im not sure how to copy it over with no internet connection.. or if it will even function without it.

Does device manager show any errors? Did the owner say anything about what happened when the issue started? If it's only 9 months old, it should be under warranty, and I think it would be a good idea to take advantage of that.

nope, cant find any driver or hardware errors. I reinstalled all the drivers regardless. chipset, network devices, etc. I think the hardware is ok, as it shows a connection, and resolves the name of my network (shown under the adapter label in network and sharing) its just a fundamental low level communication thing here, that I cant find. He took it back to best buy. its out of warranty already. shame.. its not even paid for yet. I think the only option I have left is a clean install.

A back up and clean install is the best option here. After a few hours with no resolution, that's what I would do.

open up the command prompt and type ncpa.cpl to open up the network connections panel. make sure all is checked except the microsoft network adapter multiplexer protocol.

if that doesnt work, boot into safe mode with networking options and see if you can ping 127.0.0.1 and 8.8.8.8. if yes, find out which program is interfering with your internet connection by going through the list in msconfig.

if none of the above options work, follow the guide below

thanks for that reply.

1st suggestion, all that is in place as noted

safemode does nothing different. manually set ip, connects to network, but will not access internet, or ping, loopback still does not work

from that guide.. ihavent done eveything yet, but I did note some netbt errors in event viewer. i will start there.

I love a good mystery, and I'm stoked you chose to keep sleuthing, instead of nuking it from orbit. If you find the culprit, please post back with the solution, so others can benefit.

How sure are you that the current network's DHCP actually works as expected? Is MAC filtering being used, or does it have a limited set of DHCP leases to hand out? Have you tried DHCP from something else, like a coffee shop?

If it works hardcoding, that's very clearly a DHCP-related issue... the DHCP subsystem could be corrupted, not really positive how to restore that if the automagic methods within Windows don't do it, aside from a nuke-from-orbit reinstall.
