We all know about the national do-not-call registry which basically got rid of telemarketers. But recently there's been more and more people calling for "research" and they just try to get you to answer some questions. Are you guys experiencing this too ?

Also there's been calls for donations... breast cancer, kids charities, etc.

I guess none of this is covered by the registry... but can anything be done about this ? Seems to be increasing just recently.

I screen my calls since I get a lot of calls for vacations, Girls Gone Wild videos, and people who constantly dial the wrong number. I just delete all the messages then.

you set your machine to pick up after like 1 or 2 rings ? Because 5-10 rings on each call can get quite annoying. ;)

I have the ringer turned off, so all I hear is the answering machine. If it's a call I want to take, I interrupt it. It got to the point that I would get around 5 a day, so I just use my cellphone for everything now and never use the home phone. I hardly get such calls on my cellphone.

I have a phone that does custom ringers, I put people's names/numbers into the phonebook, and when they call CID picks it up and the phones ring, otherwise they're all silent. So if it's an unknown or someone I didn't enter, the phones don't ring and after 4 rings the answering machine picks up.

that's it... next time they call, I'm asking for their home phone number so I can call them back there.
