Unshielded speakers near an LCD moniter Problem or not?

A friend was asking me if i thought this would cause a problem with his LCD flat panel moniter and honestly I have no idea if it is bad or not. Someone care to enlighten me on this. It isn't often that i get asked something pc related and am completely stumped. I really have no idea how an LCD display actually works.

That is a problem. NEVER PUT SPEAKERS NEXT TO A MONITOR!! The maganet in the speaker does not mix well with any projection device.

Um, LCD screens are not projection devices! That said, in my non-expert opinion,
I don't think there would be any problems...

Agreed Damascus, my non-expert opinion is w/ you, unshielded speakers near an LCD will not cause any problems. I've seen laptops w/ speakers near the F keys and no distortion, don't think those little laptop speakers are shielded if you ask me. Hope this helps.

psssst zim, those are shielded speakers... most speakers today are shielded.

anyway, the theory is that the magnets of speakers have a magnetic field which when placed near the electron gun of CRTs, cause the guns to missfire causing color problems.

NOW, LCDs are different. LCDs use transistors to determine which color gets activated in a pixel. there are no electrons being fired at a screen whose paths can be affected by an external magnetic field. so in theory, LCDs are not prone to the effects of an intense magnetic field. however, there can be other effects the external magnetic field can cause. so... better safe than sorry.

Mday, I'm almost positive I was able to see the magnet on the laptop that I had seen the guts of, then again, maybe it depends on the manufacturer, That, or I'm 100% wrong

The reason that the magnets in speakers cause problems with CRT monitors is that the magnets generate curved electrical fields that cause the electrons inside the picture tube to bend and land on the incorrect phosphor. Since LCD displays generally use fluorescent lights or LED's to generate the light, the fields generated by the magnet should not affect them. I've never seen LCD displays next to unshielded speakers, so I won't firmly commit to this answer, but theoretically, that's what should happen.
