Unreliable wifi

I've finally set up my old desktop box with a usb adapter I had laying around. A Dlink DWA 130, 802.11n adapter. According to signal strength its hooking up just fine to my linksys e1000 802.11N router I've got upstairs.

Unfortunately the connection is shonky to say the least. Ping, even to my router, is anything between a 12ms average to 700+. And worse packet loss seems to be a huge problem. I've pinged with 4/4 for packet loss at times. And this seems to be killing my bandwidth, which will do everything from freeze up entirely for small windows of time to averaging only about 4mbps on a 25mbps connection to the net and a solid bandwidth connection to the router. What's weird is my laptop with its built in adapter works just fine not 5 feet away from the desktop.

I've checked what I can think of. I've only a few other SSID's broudcasting around me, and I already switched to a channel none of the others are on just in case. I downloaded netstumbler, but it doesn't suppor the Dlink router so maybe I'll try again on my laptop. Other than that I can't think of what to do, any help?

I suspect the adapter is just weak. Try using it on your laptop (disable onboard with the physical switch). Start testing at your current position next to the desktop, then move towards the router a few feet at a time. If it improves as you get closer to the router, it's just a weak receiver. If it doesn't improve, it's likely a driver issue.

Lots of 1 egg reviews on Newegg.

Recommended course of action: get a new adapter.

One star reviews... no wonder I was just given the damned thing. No free wifi for me I guess, at least not the reliable kind. Thanks for the help.
