unreliable Temp Reading in BIOS?

I'm not sure if I'm getting right temperature reading from the bios on my machine.

I've been getting temps in the 50c to 50c range, which I attributed to my case (Antec Aria), but I left the cover off and it was still heating up. On some of the hotter days I was running Brothers in Arms and it was rebooting. (Any possibility the reboots are due to the Aria's 300w PS and the 6600gt?)

So I thought what the heck I'll try the X Qpack. Still have the same problem. No reboots, but I haven't been running the machine for very long (afraid I'll fry the CPU).

So I removed the stock HSF, cleaned it up with alcohol and reapplied with Arctic Silver 5.

I start up the machine (cold), immedately go into the BIOS and the machine says I'm getting a temp of 42c. This is at idle from a cold start. This can't be right can it? I leave the machine in idle and I see the temps continuing to rise (I'm still in the BIOS) to 49c. How can I determine if the readings are incorrect?

Here is my complete setup (totally stock, non overclocked):

MSI RS480
Athlon 64 3000 (boxed)
Gigabyte 6600GT 128meg
1 gig ram (corsair valueselect, 2 sticks)
X Qpack (running with the cover off)
NEC DVD rom
WD 80 gig sata

Anyone think I might have a defective CPU? I bought the MOB, CPU and ram from Monarch (to get Halflife free).

Thanks,
Dan

some sensors on mobo's are crap

reset the bios or update it several times after you've tested, if nothing, read the first line again, otherwise, check your mobo manual for jumpers 'n shiz

you can clean up your mobo as much as you want, but damaged mobo's are near unrepairable unless taken into a shop (which would cost as much as getting a new one)

For an AMD 64 Winchester/Venice 3000, you should expect to see 28C to 30C immediately upon boot, assuming your room temp is at or below 25C, and the CPU heatsink is properly attached.

A higher number could be the fault of the BIOS. Nominal idle temp is between 33C and 37C. I'd try to reflash the BIOS. Perhaps the heatspreader cap on the CPU is not make good contact with the core.

When in Bios, the CPU temperature is always higher than when in windows. This is because windows puts the CPU in idle when nothing running. The Bios is a very simple program that does not have such capabilities.
