Unreal Tournament - why does it seem so few are using the new patch?

I finally got round to buying Unreal Tournament, after liking the demo so much. First thing I did after installing it, was to install the 4.20 patch on top, thinking that I would need it to play on the net.
However, it seems that only around 20% of the servers I saw were using this patch. Others were using 402 and 413...

I'm just wondering WHY the hell this is? Thanks!

I play a lot of UT. I'm not sure why most admins have not upgraded to the latest. Probably the old adage, If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

To be honest, I'm still running 4.13. I would probably still be on 400 if I had not wanted to install some mods that required 4.13 or higher.

If the game is running fine on your system, then there really is no need to patch it. I do wish more servers would upgrade to the latest patch for one reason. There has been a lot of problems with skin cheaters on the public servers. The latest patch is supposed to fix this problem.

I think I'll patch back down to 4.13, hopefully I can do that without a clean install...

There seem to be far more 413 servers.

Snow - Your lucky. After finally getting UT run run stable (using the 4.20 patch) I'll be damned if I can get a good game online. I can only get pings of about 1500ms.

FreeServe seems to be working for you. Which I have to say is really suprising.

There's no need to downgrade to 4.13 if your already running 4.20 as all patches are network compatible.

A lot of UT servers are running on linux, which only has 413 available. Supposedly a new and improved linux client (server too I hope) will be released *soon* (we'll see). There is one explanation. Another is one already mentioned. If it works, leave it alone. A final reason is that the newer patches don't do much for the server itself. It's mainly client updates and fixes.

Snow - Just UT I'm afraid. I think from the time I first bought UT and that was when it first came out, I have perhaps only had maybe a douzen games online where the ping has been acceptable.

Just played Q3A and I get Pings from about 180 - 250 so it's quite playable.
