Unreal Tournament Question...

Pooht

Senior member
I am not sure exactly where to post this, so I am going to do it right here...I am sure no one will mind...okay, now to my question. I have a 900mhz Thunderbird, 128mb of RAM, Geforce 2 GTS, ect...tonight I am ordering more RAM. How much more performace difference will I see if I order another 128mb? Or how about another 256mb? Will I see enough of a performance difference to spend the cash on 256 more mb or just stick with the 128 more?

Thanks

If you're running Win98, 256 is about as much as you're going to need for anything. Win2k is a memory pig, so if you're planning an upgrade in the near future, you might want to bite and go for the 256. One other thing to bear in mind is that fewer 256 meg modules are low latency (CAS 2), so you'd want to check with the vendor before you fork over the dough.

I am getting Crucial CAS 2 133mhz...just the same as I have in there now...I am just confused with the size i should get 😕

Edit: If I get the 256mb it will be in 2 128mb sticks...its a bit cheaper then a 256 chip

If you're using Win98, you probably won't see much of a difference with more than 256. When I upgraded my box from 128 to 256 there was definitely a difference. I received some memory I was building a new system with, so I ran with 512 megs for a while and didn't really see any difference in performance from 256, so you might want to save your $$$ for now and just buy 1 stick.

I'm running 384MB and Win98SE, and it's a HUGE improvement over 128. But anything over 256 won't make as big of an impact as the 128->256 upgrade IMO.

Hehehehehehehehehehee....

And no the uptime isn't because it crashed. I was installing a fan (apparently my case has a little spot where no air circulates and it just happens to be where the CPU sits).

256MB is a good point for just about everything you could want to do, unless you're editing graphics or movies heavily. 128MB is actually very good for UT as well, even with a slower processor (my roommate had a K6-2/500 running with 128MB, and it ran pretty good in 640x480, almost as good as his Athlon at 1024x768).

However you'll want to tweak the settings in UT. By default it uses only 4MB of memory for caching data. You'll want to increase that to at least 64MB, 128MB if you have 256MB. Use the console, enter 'preferences', and it's in one of the menus.

thanks guys...hmm...what would i do without y'all? lol...probally waste too much money. i think i will just get that 128 and when/if i upgrade to win2k i'll probally get another 128 😀 thanks agian

There really isn't a simple way to measure what kind of improvement you'd gain because there are too many variables (video drivers, memory type, hard drive/cd rom speed, etc..). I would say 10 fps or so as a rough estimate. And smoother transitions frames during fast and furious sequences

There is a point of diminishing return. A jump from 64 to 128 might get you a 30% performance increase. 128 to 256, a 5% increase. 256 to 384, a 3% increase. 384 to 512, a 1% increase. Unless you're doing high-end graphics or CAD, 128 is about the sweet spot for Win98. 128 megs is fine for UT.

Lord Evermore: gots to save the money...only have around $240...I am a poor high school student without a job (correct, i am a slacker). I am going to order that extra 128 tonight and if I still dont get the performance I need, I might get another 128...I mean, I am going to need it later on down the road anyway 🙂

well, the main reason I want this upgrade is because I spend around $1,300 on a new computer and I am tired of seeing my fps drop under 40fps in some maps in a res like 1240x864 (or something like that)...hehe...well, I guess it still beats my tired ol' 66mhz Power Mac...lol

Pooht, I'm tellin' ya, save your money. You're going to be real disappointed you spent that $240 when you don't get the performance increase you're expecting. You will see some increase in performance, but it won't that much. And it certainly won't be $240 worth of increase. But you kids don't listen to us "older" folks anyhow, so good luck.

yeah...thats why i am waiting...i am going to do some more research before investing in another 128 after buying this one...but i know i am going to need this 128...windows is just bloat ware and takes up too much system resources

I'm sorry, I must have missed something, where was the question about UT in the original post? the thread title made me think this was a UT question

heh. The printer may not increase your framerate, but it can help get hard evendince if you spank your opponents! 🙂
