UNREAL TOURNAMENT 3: Comic Con 2007, first impressions.

I just got back from Comic Con, and got to play UT3 twice in the MaximumPC booth. I won the first tournament and won this Z-keyboard thing (some gaming keyboard where you can interchange the keys...) and the 2nd time, I got 2nd place...

SIGH.. first place won a 40 inch Westinghouse LCDTV omfg.. I was 3 frags away!!!! I CHOKED!!! I had 22 frags, and the 2nd place guy had 17...I had no kills in the final 2 minutes! I Can't believe this!!! GAH!!!!!!!!!

anyways... the review. I will make this as concise as possible.

Graphics:
OMFG!!! well, they took out a lot of the lighting stuff that we saw a year ago in screenshots, but man, the game ran smooth as silk on the Alienware PC's (intel quad core, 8800GTX). Even without the added crazy lighting (there are still sufficient lighting effects), the game looks very very good. It's total eyecandy moving at 60+ FPS. The graphics add a level of immersion. The Bio gunk from the biogun sticks to anything...even walking people, and explodes later - killing/injuring anyone within the vincinity of that person. When you see a guy that's been unloaded full of bio gunk, you can see a green glow reflected off the walls of that guy, so you better run the hell away from the green light when you see it lol.

The blast effect from a redeemer is SWEET. If you're not within the damage zone, you still get effected by the shockwave. You will see this yellow flash and everything distorts. Then, you see yourself tumble in first-person mode (or fly, depending on where the shockwave takes you).

Gameplay:
They only allowed us to play the free-for-all deathmatch mode.
The gameplay stays true to its roots. The fast pace is there, but it feels a LOT more hectic since there's a lot more particles flying around due to everyone shooting whatever it is they're shooting at each other. If you want to stay stealthy, don't get a gun that glows. The sniper rifle is such a good stealthy weapon. It's harder to spot snipers since now they can hide really well against the walls and such.
It's tougher to spot out certain enemies who have armor that blend well into the background.

Essentially, it's a very pretty UT2K3. I didn't know graphics can add to the immersion of gameplay... at least for me it did. I truely felt more connected to the game.. Those were a bad choice of words. I really can't explain the feeling. I felt extremely pumped after I played the game, and I wanted MORE. This is what nex-gen deathmatch truely is.

Weapon comments:
the Shock rifle is overpowered now. The blast radius if you shoot the secondary fire w/ the primary is larger than before. Also, the secondary fire shoots out a larger blue orb, so it was easier for me to track it. The Bio rifle's range seems to have been reduced, but it looks like it has a lot more destructive power. If they keep the weapons this way, everyone will want the shock rifle. I see the biorifle as a potential sleeper weapon. Rocket Launcher is still the same 'ole from 2K3/4. Flak Cannon looks SWEET when you shoot it.

verdict:
I'M BUYING THIS SH!T ON PREORDER RIGHT NOW! (for my PS3... PS3 version will allow for a modding community, AS WELL AS keyboard/mouse support. SWEET. For current PS3 owners, this game is truely the game to get).

EDIT: hmm, i should've put this in PC-gaming, but I meant to get this on PS3, hehe.

sigh...40..inch...westy...come..to..me 🙁..soo...close 🙁

*hugs my 40 inch sammy 1080p closely...having two 40 inchers would've been sweeeet though, or selling one and upgrading my PC 😛*
