I've got a new PC:

P4 2.4G w/533FSB
256 DDR RAM (which does need to be upped to 512)
ATI 9700
WinXP
DirectX 9

After running UT2K3 my system is totally slugged. I'm guessing that the game is just staying cached and eating up all my mem.
I'm wondering if there is anything to do about it. Do others experience this too?

I realize that the brand new game engine hasent had long for them to make updates yet, but maybe there are some, or some for the 9700? ( I heard there was one for the 9500 that helped greatly)(not to go to hardware subject :)

I'm thinking my system is pretty fast and shouldn't be having these problems. It runs the game vary well, around 30-60 fps at highest detail settings w/out filtering. It slows mostly w/ more than 8 players. But I havent checked yet to see if it has less leftover lagg if i only play against 2-3 bots.I ussually just reboot after i close UT.

Any ideas, patches, software, updates would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: After closing UT2K3 I actually got a warning from windows saying that my virtual memory levels were dangerously low. It gave me a link to a memory manger website. It ddint even look like microsoft software. I think swithcing graphics settings make it worse too.

You and I have very similar rigs,
I was wondering if you decided to increase your RAM?

Please let me know how it turns out if you do. I've been planning on going to 512 soon, but sunds like I probly need to go further.

It's a shame, I skimped on the RAM when I bought this system 2 weeks ago to keep the initial cost down in hopes that 256 DDR would be able to hold me a little while high speed mem costs come down more. but it now seems like i'll be needing to add atleast 512 more.

Please let me know how it works now if you have added any.

What happens is (and NOLF2 does that too) is that while the game is running, it needs more memory than the system has, so, since the system is not required, it puts as much of the system as possible into the pagefile.

When you are done, while you access different parts of the system again, it brings it back from the pagefile.

A memory leak in WinXP is never permanent, since the system frees up all memory allocated by that program. In Win98/ME, you may need a reboot.

RSMemphis nailed it on the head. This is nothing to worry about and the only solution would be to get more RAM.

UT2k3 on 256MB RAM is so bad.
I stuck in a 256MB higher speed chip to see if I coul doverclock, helped a bit, but performance in games was worse, even with faster proc/FSB, so the leap up back to 1Gig RAM and slower FSB/Proc had the best performance.
Games like BF1942, SC4, U2/UT2k3/Mafia are quite big hogs, and with Win XP 256 is really not enough.

No problems here at all with UT2k3. But then again, i'm running 512mb RAM. When I built my PC over a year ago I went straight for 512 because I knew 256 wouldn't be enough for XP and the games that I play. Also, 512 ddr ram was only $45 back then :)
