Unreal II: Only 10 hours of gameplay?

This is what I read. If so, that's utterly pathetic especially for a game that is premiumly priced.
Saturday at last! The big news this week would be that Unreal 2 is only three days away. If you do decide to buy Unreal 2 it will only take you a lousy 10 hours to finish. Now you have to ask yourself... is it worth $49.99 for a 10 hour game? When the first 10 hour game came out (i.e., Max Payne) it was almost a total and complete shocker. How could the developer who had previously trashed other developers for making short games serve up one of the shortest games of all time?
Since then it seems like more and more games are leaning into the 10 hour direction. Console games have traditionally been shorter than PC games and as we do more and more console news it isn't all that unusual for us to be praising a game that some people may finish in 10 hours.
Developers like to claim that as the complexity of a game goes up, that the amount of gameplay you get goes down. What was the excuse for Max Payne? It certainly didn't have complex level designs or character models. What is Legend's excuse for Unreal 2? It doesn't have any multiplayer... so why the short playing time?
Will you buy a 10 hour shooter?

No matter what, if you release a game, somebody will bitch about it. No matter what, it's never good enough. They were under no obligation to make the game in the first place. The game isn't even in stores yet!

Man I thought Max Payne's gametime was excellent.... The only reason people say it's "10 hours of gametime" is because they look at their saved game file and it says only 10 hours... when in reality that 10 hours is only if you played it consistently without dieing... The time doesn't take into account you reloading the saved game.

It's more like 20 hours of playing the game.

Actually I heard it was actually really short, most say around 8 hours. People I know who have it says its not all that great and is repetitive.

Games these days are just the same old stuff that has been cranked out before just fancier graphics, why would they need to be any longer?

Max Payne can be done in way less than 10 hours, more like 5 once you get the hang of it.
How do they know everyone will take 10 hours to finish it? Some people might go back and replay it anyway.
There are also comments about an add-on pack which while costing a bit of money will add to the gameplay, then there will be custom made maps/campaigns which will probably be made and out within a few months. Plus Legend might make some additional content vailable for free release themselves, a bit like the UT/UT2k3 bonus packs.

I've ordered it and look forward to playing it next weekend (Europe release isn't until Friday :()

That's very dissapointing. I was hoping Unreal II would be long and immersive like Half-Life was when it first came out. 10 hours of gameplay just isn't worth it. Sounds like I'll be getting this game on Kazaa before I think about buying it...

You are correct. It is about 8 hours of gameplay. even when you play it on the hardest level, it's exactly the same in terms of content i.e. repetitive.

Unreal2 only 10 Hours of gameplay eh, I hope it's harder than Max Payne. Mind you I don't play any game on easy or Medium as it takes the fun out of it. Me I'll buy it anyway as I have not played anything new (which is good IMO) other than MoHAA:Spearhead and Mafia. Now Mafia was a long game I think. Well it seemed like it but I played it intermitantly so it's hard to gauge.

Roll on 7 Feb 2003, need summut new to play. Whilst no new games come out I have to go shopping with the wife and all she want's to look at is Shoes and Baby clothes :)

50 bucks is alot for a game but I can't believe the bellyaching I'm hearing about "only ten hours of gameplay." How long do ya wanna immerse yourself in alternate reality? This game looks pretty gorgeous from where I'm sitting. Yeah, an FPS is an FPS, just like every movie you ever see is only a variant of something you've already seen before. If they come through with even a halfway decent storyline, I think Epics got a winner here. And they actually created it and published it in 3 years. That's far better than Duke VaporWare Forever or pitiful disappointments like Daikatana (I'm sorry, I said it didn't I). I'm betting this game is gonna rock and I think you guys are being way three critical. JM2C :D

I just ain't that good of a gamer . . . Maybe 10 hours for the reviewer . . .

And I know I won't pay 50 bucks for it . . . maybe 40 . . . so (at worst) $40 / 10 hours = $4 an hour . . . It's "worth" it . . . AND if I hate it, I can sell it for $20 used . . . Heck, I rent crappy movies for $4 each (and good ones too).

I really like the original Unreal - it was LONG (especially with the Return Pak) - and will buy this (anyway) . . . soon.

While there's no law stating games must be a certain length I prefer long games. Jedi Knight II's length was perfect. Deux Ex took longer to finish but I didn't mind because it was so darn *good*.

Bottom line here: $50 for 10 hours of mediocre gameplay just doesn't cut it. I'm getting "medicore" from the first reviews to emerge.

That's why I never pay $50 for an FPS anymore. Strategy games or RPGs that provide hundreds of hours of gameplay are a different story.

Max Payne rocked, though, even if it was short as hell. If Unreal 2's gameplay is that good (doubtful) I might pay as much as $30, but otherwise I'll wait until it hits the FS/T forum for $15-20.

10 hours is fine for a FPS and usually I like a minimum of 8 hours. Also it's probably going to be 10 hours if you just race through the game on an easy level without exploring everything, looking for secrets and killing all of the monsters. I will definitely and gladly pay full price for this title unless I'm bombarded by a constant stream of reviews that say the game sucks.

It's also worth noting that a lot of the people who are going to complain about the game are playing warezed versions anyway.

Really? I thought the release date was the 5th Feb?

Jedi Knight II's length was perfect.
I wouldn't say that JK2 took too much more than 10 hours to finish either.

For me it was between 15-20 hours for the singleplayer game but I'm probably in apoppin's camp of non-powergamers. Multiplayer added countless additional hours but that's neither here nor there.

Generally if most reviewers complain about the duration you know the game is too short. We'll see.

I'd estimate that it took around 12-13 hours for me (not including save/reloads of course) on the second highest difficulty level and I made sure that I killed everything, explored everywhere and did my best to find all the secrets. Like you I thought the length was good.

Generally if most reviewers complain about the duration you know the game is too short.
I've found that in the past the only time I've agreed with them is with MOHAA - Spearhead. Everything else has usually had at least 8 hours' worth of gameplay and I'm happy with that. :)

Also I have a complex queue system on which all of my games operate on and consequently I end up replaying most of the better games at least five times, adding even further value for money. 8 hours might not be a lot for $49.95 but 8 x 5 = 40 hours certainly is. And that's not including multiplayer either.

EDIT: fixed typo.

Yep, it was pretty short. Finished the game in 2 sittings (one short one, one long one). Took me about 7 hours total to complete the entire thing. Overall I was disappointed, because I was looking forward to another Unreal. Instead I got something very different. It was still a good game, with a lot of polish, but overall the experience just felt so... average. Nothing stood out as cool or "wow" like Unreal originally did. I enjoyed Legends previous game, WoT much more.
