Unreal Engine better than Quake III Engine?

I recently bought and began playing Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force which uses the Quake III engine. So far it seems like a pretty good game.

I've also seen screen shots of Deep Space Nine: The Fallen which uses the Unreal Engine.

I noticed the faces on DSP: The Fallen seem to look much more realistic than the faces on STV: Elite Force. It really does look like Sisko, Kira, Worf etc but the faces on STV: Elite Forces look cartoon like.

I know many people who would dispute this, but I think the unreal engine is much better. The physics engine is more realistic, and i like the polygon structures on the unreal characters better. They are not as lanky, and dont run as goofy as the q3 engine. Plus, the texture structure appeal to me more.

hm did you turn on the extra high detailed textures in elite force... and or texture compression?

as for polycount, definetly q3 engine.. q3a physics are tad weird on purpose.. but it feels right.

This engine war is truly a flame bait waiting to happen.. :)

Here goes.. I am a big believe in the id engines and prefer the general movement "feel" compared to all the Unreal engine games. Comparing those two games (you mentioned)is like comparing apples vs. oranges. They are two different games from two different development teams (that include art, modeling, texturing, level design, etc) that really don't have any interaction with each other. I would bet, that given enough time and energy, both games could look 99% the same and we wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

For now, the games based off the Unreal engine are going to look quite sweet and play well (they should, the engine is a few years old now). If you look at the track record of id engine games, you will find Half-Life, KingPin, Soldier of Fortune, etc. All of these games were quite good in their own respects, even with the outdated id Quake2 engine.

Quake3's engine is still pretty new (only Elite Force has it now), so it has some time before lots of developers catch onto it and make games from it. Soldier of Fortune 2 is coming out on the Q3 engine, along with Return to Castle Wolfenstein -- so we will have some time to compare Q3 engine games against the Unreal ones.

On a personal note, I prefer playing Unreal Tournament over Quake3. Unreal Tournament is a well polished game compared to Quake3, but Team Arena is what Quake3 should have been.

/me puts on flame-resistant suit.

There's also alice and fakk heavy metal 2, thats some nice eye candy. Not sure what else has it:p

elite force is a fun game, but it isn't the best use of the q3 engine out there:p

q3 engine is relatively new, runs very well using open gl, so high framerates:) Unreal on the other hand has been around for years, since voodoo1:p Its been patched and reworked like crazy, but it still kind of sucks on open gl/direct 3d. Very clear textures, and other kewl effects, but low poly/lack of curved surfaces kind of suck. Doesn't matter anyhow, both id and epic are creating new engines:p

No way. The Quake 3 engine is prettier, more advanced plus it runs a lot faster than the Unreal engine. UT's blood and gibs are truly lame compared to Quake 3's exploding body parts and blood spray.

Both engines have their pros/cons, but IMO the UT engine is more rounded. Awesome graphics, better sound/music capabilities, better editing capabilities, better suited for realism mods, better setup/online browser interface, and much better mod/mutator handling make UT the better engine.
