I still the original Unreal was one of the best games ever made. I still play it frequently along with the original UT to this day. It's combination of atmosphere and fast paced combat is still unmatched to this day.
If you have the original UT and Unreal, you can get a mod called oldskool that essentially lets you play Unreal single player in UT, and some other community made map packs. It adds UT enhancements such as decals into Unreal.

New texture packs have created by Epic and the community that make the game textures up to todays standards. These are really high quality, and they work on the new UT OpenGl driver. They require UT and oldskool, and also require the OpenGl driver from here

Also I highly recommend Operation Na Pali, Xidia Gold, and Seven Bullets. These are some of the finest single player map packs I have come across for UT and surpass the quality of the original Unreal campaign.
