Unreal 2

So yesterday i bought Unreal 2 think Yer great going to be wicked. Checked all my specs which are ok so i install it. It installs fine no problems there but whenever i try to start the game it gets to the initializing screen and gives me this error message :

General protection fault!

History: FD3DRenderInterface:😀rawPrimitive <- RenderStaticMesh <- (StaticMeshActor21) (StaticMesh IntroM.Track.intro_proto_011) <- FDynamicActor::Render <- RenderLevel <- FLevelSceneNode::Render <- FPlayerSceneNode::Render <- UGameEngine:😀raw <- UWindowsViewport::Repaint <- UWindowsClient::Tick <- ClientTick <- UGameEngine::Tick <- UpdateWorld <- MainLoop

Build: Jan 7 2003 18:16:21

I have tried reinstalling twice changing different things, i tried restarting my computer, installing it then restarting it again (Which you shouldnt have to do anyway) and still no change. Is this my computer? A bodged CD? Any help would be great thanks guys.

I don't really understand the error message but a number of ppl have had issues with EAX. Check and see if it is selected and then deselect it if it is. However, there is already a patch out for EAX. Check their website as I can't recall where i got it from...🙁

[edit]

U can get it here. 🙂

If official beta EAX patch, is bodged. The file that it installs DefOpenAL32.dll, is named wrong, so it wont make difference, try renameing it to what it should be. Just get rid of the "1" in the file name, and you should be fine with that.

However, the error message doesnt relate to sound problems.
It seems to have trouble with rendering the world itself.

Try:-
Updating ALL drivers, vid, snd, dx, ect;
Updating Windows in general, via windows update.
making the windows page file larger.
re-installing the game.
Try the game on another pc, to see if the CD is bodged.

Are you trying to run that with your TNT2 card?

Make sure that you have the 41.09 drivers installed.

if you are trying to run it with the TNT2 listed for your rig that is your problem, min system requirement is geforce 2 MX

I can see where your coming from though.
Gone are the times when the minimum spec could be lower, by us tweaking the game a bit.
With these new "breed" of "heavyweight"(system req wise) games, tweaking does very little for our cause.
And in the famous words of......well i forget, but........Ah Well Sh1t happens!!!

The game runs pretty bad on my Geforce3, and you expected it to run 'ok' on a TNT2? It doesn't even have T&L!

I have the exact same problem. Well, I can't confirm its exact, but I get the General Protection Fault too sometimes during level loads(the "Initializing" screen. I think its just Unreal II being REALLY REALLY demanding on the system. My system is overclocked so that could be why. It runs every other 3D application fine(3DMark2001SE, 3DMark 03, Quake3:Arena, RtCW, SpecViewPerf 7.0, even the Doom3 Alpha) except for UT2003 and Unreal II.

So, my solution is simply to save really often, in case it bombs out during the level loads...when that happens, I just wait for a while for things to cool down, then go back into the game...

If your system is overclocked, then I guess you might get it too.

By the way, my system is a P4 2.4B clocked to 3023MHz on a Gigabyte GA-8PE667 motherboard, 1024MB DDR-SDRAM running at 425MHz, an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro clocked at 340/330MHz, so its definitely above even the "Recommended System Requirements" rating 🙂

And no, I'm not using EAX, I've disabled it, but still the problem arises sometimes.

Great game though...I *think* I'm almost done...got all 7 artifacts...gone back to Avalon, Atlantis is down...now I have to fight this mutant KAI...

Oops, did I just give the story away? 🙂

I keep having the game lock and die at the end of one of the missions. I dont know the name of the mission but its the one where you have to resuce the marines who got busted putting demo charges on the dam. I finish the mission and when the game goes to the cut scene where I am taking off in my ship (at the point where im assuming I get to watch the dam go BOOM) the game quits out to Windows XP.

I am running an Athlon XP1900 (overclocked to XP2000) a Vision Tek Extacy Ti4400, 512 Mb of Crucial PC 2100 DDR, SB Live 5.1.

I am not running EAX and I have tried the patch.

Just curious, is it a GPF like what moonshinemadness and I have been getting? Also, did you try the game with stock system that's not overclocked or running out of spec in any way? I get the GPFs at the end of a lot of levels, not just that one...

This game is only average in my opinion.
What's really wierd is that I can play UT 2003 pretty much maxed out and never have any lag, but UT 2 gets pretty choppy sometimes.
I won't even get started on the average gameplay.

The Mission is called Severnya.(a dam mission. level called Severnya. Goldeneye influences anyone?)

I had a similar problem to some of you lot, a while back. UT2003 wouldnt run, at all. Kept crashing on the inital loading screen, when my XP1800 was running at XP2000. Was OK at XP1800 Though.

Ive tried running my machine stock and no change, still got the error. I don't see any type of error message, the game just stops and goes to the Windows desktop as if the game had never been running.

Look at my system. Everything's overclocked and Unreal II runs like crap even at 1024x768. I'm gonna upgrade very soon. You should, too.🙂

Try this:

Go into your Unreal2 directory, System directory, and open Unreal2.ini with notepad.
Go to section [Engine.GameEngine], change CacheSizeMegs to 128 (default is 8).
Go to section [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice], change UseCompressedLightmaps to True.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the same tweaks that the Original unreal used and most people had the same complaints. Can you imagine the game engine only caching 8 megs? Before you go and sell your systems, I would wait for a patch. If Legend wants this game to sell, it will have to make it compatible with the majority of computers out in the world, not just for our 3% of folks running anything over 1200MHZ. (the 3% is a guess from what I see come across my bench).

These changes should help, especially the CacheSizeMegs.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have my cache meg size set to 512 (i have 768mb of memory), it doesnt seem to make that much difference FPS wise, but my load time are even shorter than they already were.
I do this little tweak to all of my Unreal Baced games, seems to make them more stable as well, as well a less chance of a crash due to insufficiant virtual memory.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I found another tweak that completely stopped all my hitching. After installing the no cd patch, I stated looking through C:\Unreal2\System\Unreal2.ini and found under [D3DDrv.D3DRenderDevice] I changed the "AvoidHitches=False" to True.

Hope this helps.
