Kinda weird.....

I just noticed it. W2K Pro SP2. I can use and abuse either my external USB 2.0 hard drive, and my USB 1.1 256MB jump drive--no problems.

But.....when I unplug either of them, either from my USB 2.0 card or my jump drive from either the card or my USB keyboard, it crashes my minimized Jagged Alliance 2 game (JA nicely says it's being corrupted, and it even automatically makes a save file--nothing has ever crashed it before. It's the only weird thing I've noticed so far. Yes, I do first STOP that little systray icon thingy. Maybe I should not be stopping the device, but rather the lettered drive or the USB branch? It shows the branch, lettered device, and the actual device.

Anyone else with similar problem? It's not major......just kinda weird.

When it comes to W2K, write caching is enabled for removable devices such as USB HDs and thumb drives. As I recall, write caching is disabled in XP.

I noticed that if I unplugged my 128mb USB drive from my W2K system at work w/o using the STOP command first, I would sometimes lose the data that I just copied over a few seconds ago.

I agree, you are doing everything right, but I would think the write behind caching has something to do with JA2 crashing...wierd....

BlueWeasel--

Good point. I had heard of that, so I make sure when I do the stop, it says it's OK to remove....and, it is always at least 5 minutes since I've been doing anything with that device, and the light on the device is off, indicating it is OK to remove. I'm not losing any data.
