Is it safe to unplug the fan on my radeon 8500 and use a zalman fan bracket to stick a quiet 92mm fan in front of it?

might be OK, but I'd be leary about it. If it doesn't work, you'll probably not damage the card. These run hot.

That should work just fine. There's several people that have done that and posted about it over at SilentPCReview.com forums, except that they'e used the even lower air flow 80mm Panaflo L1A to cool the card.

I just replaced my 8500 with a 9700, and I had passively cooled the 8500 and overcloked it for almost a year and a half. You will be fine even without a fan cooling it. :)

the amoutn of air a fan bracket would send over the card is def enough. little fans push very little air.
