Unpaid time off from work

I'm considering asking about time taking unpaid time off from my job for 3-4 weeks or longer if possible. I need a sabbatical to just clear my head, get back into shape and maybe take up a few classes at the local college. Anyone ever do this before? If so did you have a job when you got back?

Yes. It is not a big deal here. We work so much that when we need some time off all we have to do is ask.

they're not college credited courses, I'm thinking of taking up a few real estate appraisal classes. 2 or 3 nights a week for 6-8 weeks

Go for it. I think the company should at least recognize your desire to rest a bit and come back a stronger person. What they don't need to know is that you're preparing yourself for a career outside of the current company.

well I'm not even sure if I'll like the work, hopefully the classes will give me some idea

depends on what you're working on, as well.

you're best bet would be to talk it over with your manager.

If I asked my boss that question, I'd be laughed out of his office. Considering I'm a engineer at an extremely small company (3 engineers, 1 secretary), there's no one else to do my job.
