I agree. IIRC, it IS illegal in Kahleeforneeya, even with college credit.

Question: if I am on an unpaid internship does that void unemployment?

One of the requirements for drawing unemployment typically is that you have to be available to work if it is offered. Assuming you wouldn't turn down a paying gig for an unpaid internship then it shouldn't disqualify you from receiving unemployment benefits.

cool.

Goose, why would you even look at an internship? Didn't you just lose a decent job that you'd had for some time?

The problem with unemployment and internships is that you have to be available for paid work if it's available. Would the internship give you time off to apply for and interview for "real" jobs?
Why would a company give someone an internship knowing that they're looking for a regular job? Wouldn't they be more inclined to give the internship to a student looking for some experience in the field?

I just graduated and have been looking for something full time. Applied for a paid internship a while back and just got a call saying it was now for credit only. I took it. Going to get credit towards a masters(already have 12 credits from senior year, and my school offers a 5th year MBA, so shouldn't be too hard to finish it off when I want).

I figure it'll give me more time to look for something full time, and also should be nice on a resume

Wrong. California has slightly stricter rules than the federal government because they require it to be part of school program in addition to following the other requirements.

Over the years where I work unpaid internships have led to paid internships, positions with my department, positions with other employers with whom we've had contact with, references that carry a great amount of weight for admission to higher degree programs, etc. It's about making contacts and a name for yourself. It says a lot about the character of the individual that works hard for the knowledge not the pay when first starting your career.

Exactly.

I'd jump at the chance if it was at a solid company that could advance my career

If it's all you can get, the experience and being able to put it on your resume is very valuable. If you're stuck between doing an unpaid internship or working at McDonald's for minimum wage or sitting at home all summer, take the internship.

It depends on the type of work being done.

My friend did an internship with the Astros that was unpaid. I think this is fairly typical with sporting venues. I'm sure the demand for the job is high because of the cool "perks".

If you are doing IT, there are thousands of paid internships out there. I wouldn't do an unpaid internship unless the networking and experience were really good. I'd maybe do an unpaid internship at Microsoft...but I wouldn't do an unpaid internship at a small development shop with four employees.

You're probably right. My information came from a couple of my accounting professors who said they were now against Kahleeforneeya law, mostly because of work comp related issues and liability for injuries.
