There is an unofficial patch to fix what Eden games never did. That's online friendly too.

There use to be the Community Patch: http://forum.turboduck.net/threads/27310-Test-Drive-Unlimited-2-Community-Patch (This patch appears to be abandoned since the DLC2 patch came out. Plus it seems the Unofficial patch is working to bring most of these features to it's patch too.)
You will need to unpack the game files if you want all the features: http://www.tdumods.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?601.0
Or install the patch for the retail game (non-unpacked) you will get most but not all of the features the patch has to offer unless you unpack.

While the unofficial patch is fine for playing online, other mods may not so use caution if you decide to do any further modding by checking for online or offline only compatibility first.

Quick FPS boost tip. As soon as you start the game and the first screen appears quickly Alt + Tab to the Desktop for 30 seconds. I don't know why but this fixes low FPS issues. Video: http://youtu.be/HZwNTqxeIRI
