It's fine so long as you are a decent shot. I've seen a lot of hacks maim a deer pretty good because they didn't pick good shots and ended up slamming the deer in the shoulder blade or gut shot it and the deer wound up dying a few days later.

Same thing goes for any form of hunting really. Don't take a shot unless you know you can make a clean kill.

As long as you eat it hunting is alright with me... if you don't eat it seems wasteful.

Not to toot my own horn, but I practice ALOT with my bow. He has money and he gave me all his hand me downs (last years $500 setup). He and I take great pride in searching for stands and making sure the stands are safe and we are not near anyone...

I don't approve of killing for killing's sake, but if you're going to use the animal then by all means go get your deer. In my area we have way too many deer as it is, and I'm in BFE. It's even worse in urban/suburban areas around here. Something has to keep their numbers down.

I think of it just like I do hunting them with shotguns. I don't enjoy killing animals myself, but if its your bag have a blast.

Ya, he keeps some of the meat and passes the rest out to co-workers at the business he owns. He usually keeps the head to mount it. We have a very good family friend that has all the butcher tools to cut the meat and wrap it.

i voted "piss up a rope" simply becuase it is a fantastic phrase. and what a song!
but yeah, just hunt legally and making use of what you hunt and what business is it of mine to raise hell anyway?

I live in the suburbs of Cincinnati (southern Ohio) and deer pop around here is out of control IMO. My wife has hit plenty and i have come really close. When we go camping in the winter instead of getting meat at the store we always use venison for steaks at night. Not to mention eating it at home.
When i lived in Florida i always thought it was ghetto to eat it but its not bad at all. Especially when camping when everything tastes better over a fire. :D

Ya, I had to get a license and all that. I would MUCH rather kill one this year with a bow than my shotty. It seems so much more old school to do it "right".

Why did you exclude rifle hunting? AFAIK on the west coast shotguns are not allowed for deer. My knowledge is pretty old perhaps they have changed the laws. In many areas you may have to deal with 100yd plus shots so a shotgun is pretty worthless.

Ok, somebody flame me telling about how they now make shotguns accurate out to 5 miles! :)

Illinois just passed a weird law recently that allowed you to carry a handgun durring any deer hunting season. It's just seems odd for it to be bow hunting season but you could be packing heat for those "close encounters".

BTW - I'd love to get into muzzle loader deer hunter.

If you can chase a deer down on foot and gnaw its hooves off with your teeth then you have the right to kill it.

I personally like to sneak up from behind them while they are feedin' on them corn in my driveway. Then i like to 'judo chop' em. After that my granny throws the whole animal in the brick oven we got in the back yard.

Seriously though, If I had the skillz I'd rather use a bow or even a spear :) then a shotty. Kinda like the old ways....

If numbers haven't changed, the area I live in has the highest white tailed deer population.

Best of luck with the huntin'

The only buck I ever got was with the grill on truck.....j/k....not

You're from Ohio, eh? Well hell, what do ya need a bow for? You can scrape two per day right off any 4 mile stretch of road! But, do you think the Bambi lovers around here would allow the bow season to lengthened a few days?
