So booted it up, never having played the game before. Did the tutorials and went to the first mission.

Built a scavenger and pulled in some wreckage. Easy enough. Checked my objectives and the remaining, and apparently first, objective was to mine an Asteroid. Ooops, not enough credits to build a mining ship because I built the scavenger first. Really? Time to restart mission, sigh...

You start with a resource collector, you don't have to build one.

I cant remember what mission it was as its been ages since that I last played it but there was one where there is was a huge sphere with ion ships.

I remember seeing how many of then I could capture just for fun, and I remember getting about say if there is 150, think i had about 40 or so of them
If you captured too many, the rest moved off the map.

Its tempting but I read of some bugs on the steam forums. For $35 it better be dang near perfect and the multiplayer is still beta. I'm pretty sure I still have the discs for the originals so maybe I'll go reinstall those. Cataclysm was my favorite of the three games.

Unfortunately they unified the engine to HW2. I really didn't like HW2 as much as HW1 and cataclysm had the funest mechanics in skirmish modes. The formations just don't hold as well with the HW2 engine vs the former and you don't feel as in control of everything because of the groupings for the small fighters. The most awesome was claw or sphere formations actually make a static ball around a bigger ship and was just awesome.

From the videos I've seen it's still the HW1 mechanics. Individual fighters and a large selection of formations.

Is there a way to speed up battles. I literally sat at the monitor for 10 minutes last night just watching, actually waiting, for a small battle to end in the 2nd mission.

No, and this wasn't a problem in the original. I think a lot of the issues in HW1R come from moving it to the HW2 engine and not fully balancing it. The fighters don't really attack aggressively and stay in formation like they did in the original. The corvettes do not maneuver to keep their weapons on target either although they are not quite as bad. I'm finding fighters to be almost useless in the HW1R campaign and am just making corvettes.

Sounds like Gearbox has some fixing to do before I play through Homeworld again.
I dunno about that... I mean, I could probably play through HW1 in my sleep, even after all these years. A slightly different game balance might be entertaining.

They kept the Agnus Dei right?

Bought, downloaded, will play this weekend.

I'm only on the fourth mission or so, but I'm enjoying the game. It is however different in feel than the original, and while not game-breaking, I've run into at least 10 different bugs, like the zoom gets stuck and all ships show like they are selected.

Yeah HW1:R is pretty buggy. If you reload during a mission you will likely break scripted events and such, the only way to fix is to restart the mission from the main menu. And the lack of formations and repairing is a bit disappointing. But oh well, I'm still happy with it and looking forward to HW2:R when I get to it.

Yep the game is still a bit bugged, multi and single. The campaign is still very enjoyable epecially because...

Salvage spamming still works. 😀

Hell yes if it works, now even if the enemy targets your corvettes they are just too good...

Big complaint from the die hard, no actually any HW1 fans: the move to HW2 engine wasn't really a good idea beside for graphics, which btw are Amazing.

Multiplayer is beta and for good reasons: beside bugs and all the balance is really broken late game now.

  • HW1 races need to rush or they get kicked by ugraded HW2 ships.
  • Ships cap is the same for capital class but no upgrades make the HW1 useless after some time, be it a 1v1 or full engagé.
  • Fighters and corvettes are a money sink beside for defenders and multi-gun corvettes, which still can't hold a candle to their older self.
So far Gearbox is listening and actively anwering on the forums hence my hopes are for some large patches who fix both bugs and gameplay.

PS: many new players aren't noticing the issues as much and overall the game is appreciated by most of them. So happy to see this happening!

I only played HW2 and never HW1 (sin I know... i know the story though!) are the old races taiidan and kushaan? Do they have battlecruisers of their own?

Fighters are worthless, otherwise no issues going through the campaign. I'm not even salvage spamming...

...except for all those ion frigates...oh, and those destroyers...oh, and almost all the 'vettes from the first Turanic encounter :awe:

The two games have more or less equivalent classes, so they buffed destroyers and heavy cruisers to reach HW2 values (but with no upgrades, that's why they are bad late game).

Almost every ship got a buff in firepower too, but that makes battles shorter and more of like: jump here - kill that - you win/lose (insert coin/luck/partially your ability).

Plus right now there's no way for Kushan/Taidaan players to build more than a cruiser at time when the other races can have multiple shipyard instead... so when your mothership dies you lose.

After any stability patch this seriously needs some balance or most encounters are gonna be all HW1 or all HW2 races instead of the intended 4 races battles...

HW 1 is my favorite game ... since I started playing games back in good old 1983.

Question: I am leaning away from purchasing this remake ... that is until they work out the bugs and add some spit and polish to it. I have all of the "original" HW games (1, 2 and Cataclysm) to fall back on. Is the remake that "bad" so that waiting until polished is the best alternative?

Thanks ...

I ran into 1 bug with slighly messed up shadows on ships and that's it and I'm about 6 missions into campaign. The graphics are gorgeous.

I loaded up the game, played, saw the mothership above the planet with fighters leaving trails all around the place and it sent a shiver down my spine and brought me back to my childhood. I went out that night and the first thing that I did after coming back was get back into the game.

I did get stuck on a black screen when I tried to skip a cinematic, but otherwise it's been free of glitches.

Edit: Also, captured Taidan carrier won't construct anything. Works as a dock, though.

Doesnt matter. Its still easy to build the wrong things and fail a mission. I had to do every single one multiple times just to figure out what was essential.

Very true. Gameplay came back to me fairly quickly thank goodness. Finishing like the third level where you destroy an enemy carrier. Leaving with 10 ion canon frigates, 14 heavy corvettes, 2 support frigates and 4 resource collectors. Hopefully enough for whatever comes next, lest I built the wrong stuff 🙂
