KNOWN PROBLEMS:

some people have reported buzzing sound from their lcd, especially near the power cord

problems displaying dvds encoded in macrovision over 480P component input

problems displaying HDTV from outboard tuner box over DVI input

TESTING:

Equipement used

Dell 2405FPW
Denon DVD-3800
Motorola HD box
XBOX

When hooked up to denon DVD-3800 via component video with 480P output

Most store bought dvds will not work correctly. They top part of the screen is jarbled. Sometimes you can't notice because a movie is widescreen and the black part it jarbled, but it is in fact still jarbled. Examples of DVD's that don't work: Man On Fire, Gone in 60 Seconds, The Rock ...

Some store bought DVDs work fine. Examples: Ronin

ALL DVDS burnt with DVD Shrink with Macrovision removed work fine.

When hooked up to denon DVD-3800 via component video with 480i output

Macrovision movies get no output / macrovision free movies get an output in 480i

When hooked up to denon DVD-3800 via Svideo or Composite Video with 480i output

ALL DVDS work

When hooked up to my Motorola HD box via component video with 1080i output

All HD Channels look phenonimal. Regular channels are displayed at 480i and look like normal tv.

When hooked up to my Motorola HD box via dvi with 1080i output

The set works for a couple seconds then shuts off and displays nothing.

CONCLUSIONS:

This monitor looks stunning with high quality 480P dvds coming from a nice progressive scan dvd player and looks even better with 1080i output from High Definition TV or High Definition Video Games.

Low resolution analog sources like 480i tv, analog video games, and 480i dvds look pretty bad. Slightly worse then on an analog tv but i have found this to be the case on every HDTV / Monitor i have owned.

Oh yeah it also works perfect as a computer monitor. Best Monitor i have ever owned. Sold my dual 2001Fp's and got this. I couldn't be happier.

Well it depends on the movie. I strip my moves of all the menus and uneeded audio tracks. So i have just the movie and DTS (or dolby d if there is no dts track). Doing this there is no video quality loss for about half the films out there. For the other half, either buy dual layer dvds or you have to live with the 5% compression.

Service menu: These should come factory adjusted to your specific monitor. Getting settings from someone with good calibration equipment might be useless for your monitor.

DVD + component: Titles that should work without any component glitches/corruption include LOTR:TT, Matrix 2 & 3, Ronin, Harry Potter 1.

Question: When hooked up via component to HD box, does it correctly identify (when you hit the setup button) 480i, 720p, and 1080i broadcasts ?

Question: If you have any of these DVDs, could you try them? I think they all have Macrovision protection: Way of the Gun, Dark City, Little Nicky, Lawnmower Man, Magnolia, American History X, Blade, Se7en, Thin Red Line, Airforce One.

Question: Does it make a difference for corrupted signals if your Denon 3800 is set to Progressive Mode - Mode 1 or Mode 2? Maybe the monitor can't handle errors introduced by cadence/frame or flags.

I have only been using mode 1 since it is known to be better (thanks to the dvd benchmark) i will try mode 2 tonight.

Full screen playback of my Panasonic portable dvd player via composite ain't too great but I love being able to watch tv input and use the computer without having to use a Wintv card.

Answer: When hooked up via component to HD box, it correcntly identified 480i and 1080i broadcasts. (either i don't have any 720p broadcasts or it didn't identify them. im leaning towards i don't have any)

Answer: No i don't have any of those.

DVDS that work = Ronin, Any burnt DVD ripped with DVD Shrink

DVDS that don't work = Bad Boys, Man on fire, Gone in 60 seconds

Answer: Mode 1 and 2 are both the same

Well finally hooked up the Xbox. As expected hooked up with composite the video quality is ok. Its probably a little worse then playing on a nice non-hd tv. However if you got the component pack it looks pretty darn sweet hooked up 1080i.

Conlcusion: If you have this monitor and you don't buy the HD kit you are stupid.

I have become so HD snobby over the last 4 years, i hate to watch analog signals now. I don't have any hooked up to my living room tv, only progressive scan dvd, HDTV and high def video games.. (cept for the NON-HD tv channels)

I have the xbox in widescreen mode with the analog signal and it filled the whole screen.

I'm personally convinced that the sync problem is because the monitor can't handle Macrovision / Copy Protection.

The 2405 has three display modes for most modes -- Fill (fills the entire screen), Aspect (enlarges the image while maintaining the aspect ratio), and 1:1 (displays exact resolution).

As for 720p broadcasts, iirc ABC and ESPN HD content should be in 720p.

Depending on the HDBOX he may have it set to always output 1080i. Also some areas are sideconverting 720p to 1080i before broadcast too. I have not tried my hd box through the lcd yet, maybe this weekend.

I was wondering one thing about the monitor. Right now I have a Planar 21" LCD (25ms eww) and I was wondering if you have ever watched and Flash videos, particularly Homestar runner's strong bad email. I get horrible ghosting on my current screen when strong bad (giant red head) walks over a green background. I played on some more recent dells and the ghosting was significantly less, but I was wondering how it is on this new screen with even lower refresh times?

Can someone elaborate on what the HDTV kit is. It is not listed on Dell's website under "related products" for the monitor. Is it a Dell add-on? Where does it interface with the monitor? Is it only useful for TV-in via S-vid connectors, etc??
