Perhaps under the forums new ownership by Purch we'll see a return to this kind of fun. Deliberate this time.

ATI dominated Nvidia in 2003 and 2004. I've owned the 9700 Pro, 9800 Pro, and the X800XT. You would have had to be insane to get a GeForce FX at the time.

I owned three 9700s and one 9500pro during that time. I also bought a used X800XTPE (<--WTF). Great cards and great time for AMD, although Nvidia was rebounding back quickly with the 6xxx series which was very good.

Edit, found one of my favorite coolers, it was a Gainward FX 5900, red pcb, single slot cooler with dual fans. Red flames made it complete!

Most of those sold propably sitting in basements or in garbage dumps somewhere. your best bet is propably just snooping around on ebay or gumtree and similar + check local "pc hardware gold hands" if there are any in your area.

for bashing purposes? come on.. Why would I bring up a decade old video card to start a flame war? I want one. I made the topic here hoping that fellow enthusiasts could shed some light on the situation and maybe know of a golden stash.

Merely posting a wtb thread wouldn't have gotten me anywhere. You don't usually see really old hardware fs on the forums. Just people trying to sell 2-3 year old processors for more than I can buy a new one for at my local Microcenter

Anyhow, it is fun to have threads about this stuff cause it brings a little history and fun to an otherwise weekly rotation of the same stale topics.

I have been snooping around, lol. Like I said in the OP, I have been snooping around for the *ahem cough* unicorn 5800 ultra for about 5 years with zero luck seeing one even pop up on ebay. That doesn't mean that it hasn't happened but I do look regularly.

On a side note, wasn't the card not bad for DX8? it just tanked in DX9 if memory serves me right.. It had some questionable IQ regarding AA but AF was good.. so long ago!

No, it was bad in DX8 too because to get decent IQ, you had to use the highest quality settings and performance bombed against ATI quality mode, that still managed superior IQ at the same time. Most reviewers tested in Balanced mode as a result, which is why 5000 series looked good in benchmarks but was junk in the real world, except OpenGL and flight sims where ATI had serious disadvantages at times. What made it worse that when it came out late, it cost $100 more than a 9700Pro and with stock cooler it was unusable which meant spending $50 more for an after-market cooler. As a result you ended up with a ~ $450 FX5800U against a $300 9700 Pro. Back then gamers were much less brand loyal to NV so it was inconceivable for an unbiased gamer to pay $100-150 more for NV that had worse IQ.

You could also bios flash the 9500pro into a 9700, and once ATI brought out 9800 Pro and 9800 XT, it was all over for the 5800/5900 series. Ironically the biggest NV fans still bought 5000 series at the same. I am not going to name any members on our forums but those who owned 5000 series and skipped 9700/9800 have exclusively owned NV since then too. Ownership of 5800/5900 series is pretty much a gauranteed barometer of "pointing out NV fanboys." The lower end cards such as FX5200-5600 were even worse. Thankfully 6800GT/U series was excellent.

I had a chaintech 5200, boy i had no idea what bad buy decision was at that time. Then I played battlefield 1942 and realized i couldnt get a bearable framerate in areas with many 2d trees and smoke effects also tanked the fps. And i was playing on all low cept view distance.

I do admire Lava and his quest for this card.I got a 780gs motherboard that apparently can house Phenom 2 95w processors but is known to only support Phenom 1 officially.Got this urge one day to drop in a 95w 1045t and something tells me it would work lol.I heard all kinds of crazy compatibility stories with AMD motherboards and cpus.....theres a old thread on this forum of someone who dropped in a x4 940 even with a obsolete bios predating the P2 release and it worked without fail.

Sorry for going basically off top but my point is the pure curiosity and the investment into what people would think is a waste of money.It is fun to revisit this stuff i guess from time to time

I have sourced most of these over time but some proved to be tricky to get at a good price or even just to find.

No, you couldn't because the only difference between 9500pro and 9700pro was bus width you must have mistaken a regular 9500 with 9500 pro. A vanilla 9500 had 4 pipelines and 256 bit bus, it used the same chip as 9700pro so half the pipelines were disabled.
BTW. If I remember correctly there was a time when you could buy some version of 5900 for the price of 9600pro and it wasn't a bad deal at all. I remember such a deal but maybe it was local or something. A similar situation happened with 7900GTX and 1900XT/1950 but at that time I had a 7900GTO 512MB, that particular version of 7900 actually made sense, otherwise you would have to bit a fanboy to choose a 5800/5900 series card over 9700/9800 or 7900GTX over 1900XT/1950XT(X) ATI cards very unequivocally better. I had 9500pro and 7900GTO back then.

Speaking of rarity, how about prototype video cards like 3dfx V5 6000 or 3dfx Rampage? No collection complete without these.

ahhh. I remember the bliss. I imagine locating one of them would be painful but worth it.

As far as the prototype cards are concerned, I find them to be cool but I have a limit on how much I'm willing to spend on this stuff. Buying a working voodoo 6000 would be cool but I'd rather waste that kind of money on my main rig or my 911.

There is a Gainward Bliss 7800 gs on ebay right now but it is way out of my price range for such a card. It would cost about $150. No thanks

It's a shame there was no Youtube back then as the noise debate would've been easily squashed.

Still, now we have the CEO stating the card almost bankrupted the company, which is infinitely better proof. I guess "UT2003 cowering before the card" doesn't mean much after all. :awe:
