Unnapreciative people really piss me off

A relative called me begging me to make a website for her on the cheap because she couldnt afford it. She wanted to pay $500. I made it quite clear to her that the minimum we do websites for is usually around 10k, but I would do this for $500 when I had spare time as a favor. Not completely "getting it" she harrassed me for a month or so asking when it was going to be ready. Just to get her off my back I spent a few hours yesterday doing her site while putting off real clients. Today she called me that the colors are not right, the fonts aren't good, we discussed doing it differently, etc. etc. I wanted to hang up on her. For God's sake, I'm doing a FAVOR. Take it or leave it. Actually, please leave it. I don't want you hassling me.

I told her (too nicely) that for $500 I'm not spending too much more time on this. I have real paying clients. I don't have the time for her shite. "But when we met, we discussed doing it differently. etc.etc.".

STFU. You're paying $500. Shut up, sit down and be grateful.

Relatives suck.

Agreed. Unfortunately, in my experience, people don't see web design/programming as a high cost service. After all, anyone with a computer and a free copy of Frontpage can make a professional website, right? 😛

I can feel for you. My cousin does high-end websites for clients, and I'm trying to get into the buisness myself. I have respect for you guys. Some people are just really, really, ungrateful.

That being said, yes, having relatives that know you are "good with computers" is never, ever a good thing

How close of a relative?

I would simply refund her $$$ and be done with it.

My aunt.

I told her to call me during business hours, tell me exactly what she wants different and I'll tell her if I can do her changes. She never paid me yet, so there's no refund. But if she starts bitching some more I'm gonna tell her to go somewhere else and see what she can get for $500.

Very true.

I don't make near 10k off a site myself. I am a graphic designer. I work with a team of programmers/developers. They send me their graphics work. Together, that's normally around what the complete sites cost.

I understand Tri-state is expensive, but you better make an extremely comprehensive website, front/back end, and full support for 10K.

As for your aunt, give her $500 worth of website. Tell her you get what you pay for.

Most of them are ecommerce, full custom shopping cart, full back-end, etc.
But really, this post is not about how much sites usually cost. It's about people with rotten attitudes.

It's like yelling to a crowd of zombies, "I've got thick, juicy brains here, and my legs are paralyzed!!!" then you go hide in an appliance store that lacks curtains on its large pane windows.
You can run, but they'll still find you.

Really? Well, I don't appreciate you saying that!! 😉

Actually, friends/relatives knowing you know computers isn't quite as bad as winning the lottery.....but it's close! The ones you wouldn't mind doing the favor for, never bother asking for it. The ones that are the most grating, ungrateful types are the first in line for something!

yeah, you messed up by saying yes to a discounted price
if you had stuck with $10,000 then she wouldn't have done it and you would be free

I really appreciate you taking the time to post your rant. You've made the site bigger and given me something new to click on, and for that... I thank you. Keep up the good work buddy.

If it was family I probably would have told them I'd do something quick and simple for them for free, but if they wanted something more than that they'd have to find someone with more time to work on it than I had right now. Any time you take money from someone for a job they expect you to do it their way, on the cheap or not, relative or not.

Has she done a lot for you when you were a kid? ie: give you presents, take care of you when ur parents were out... stuff like that? Cuz if so, they maybe she figures you owe her.

No.

It's not like I lowered a price from 10k to 500 dollars. A site like she wants would not cost anywhere near that. It's a simple, clean, functional site without much to it. But we don't usually do such sites.

While I share your sentiment, I also cannot ignore the flip-side. People who exaggerate the smallest things as if they're heroic acts of god also generate similar feelings. You took the trash out? THANK! YOU! WOW, THANK YOU!! THANK YOU THANK YOU!

Chill, bitch, it's the farking trash.
