unmountable_boot_volume

fell asleep watching movie on computer. woke up next morning and computer was frozen. i restarted the computer and a short time after windows was attempting to load, a blue screen appeared. it indicated that windows halted to prevent any possible further damage to my computer. a few lines down it had what appeared to be the error 'unmountable_boot_volume'.

is there a solution to this problem? i can get into BIOS fine but nothing i tried fixed it. i also tried a CMOS clearing. the blue screen indicated trying to remove any new software/hardware that ive installed, but i havent installed or added anything new in at least a few weeks. any help is greatly appreciated.
