UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error - Still Need HELP!!!

Specs: Dell XPS T700r, PIII 700, 384MB PC100 memory. WinXP Pro SP2. 80GB HD with OS and programs on it, 20GB HD with back up files and paging file. Also have and Ultra ATA/66 controller card that came with the computer when I bought it.

My wife restarted the computer and got the error message below. We have not added any new hardware or software in weeks and have restarted the computer multiple times without problems. Error message contents:

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren?t sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

When choosing any of the Safe Modes, messages quickly scroll then computer restarts. Tried all three types of safe modes multiple times.

When choosing Last Known Good Configuration or Start Windows Normally, a blue error screen appears for about a half second and then the computer restarts.


I unplugged all peripherals except mouse, keyboard and monitor. I also tried with the second hard drive plugged in and unplugged (the paging file is on this 20GB drive, not sure if that?s relevant). I have two memory modules, tried them independently also.

I then turned off Automatic Restart option (pressed F8 while booting for Advanced Startup Options) so I would have time to read the blue screen of death:


A problem has been detected and windows has shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

Attempted to boot from the windows XP CD. Tried both options:

1) To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

With the second hard drive plugged in, I get the ?Windows XP Professional Startup? at the top of the screen and ?Examining 19470 MB Disk 0 at Id 2 on bus 0 on ultra?? at the bottom and then it just sits there so I can?t type in any commands like chkdsk /r. I let it sit overnight and it didn't advance, so I can't use the chkdsk command.

With second hard drive unplugged, says ?Windows XP Professional Setup? at the top and ?Examining startup environment?? at the bottom and doesn?t do anything else even after about an hour.

2) To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

Same results as above with the second hard drive plugged in.

If I unplug the second hard drive, I get the following error message:

The problem seems to be caused by the following file: ntfs.sys

I found this article from Microsoft: link. It says that if the second parameter (0xbbbbbbbb) of the Stop error is 0xC0000032, then the file system is damaged. Well the second perameter is not 0xC0000032, so maybe it's the IDE cable?

It talks about 40 pin vs. 80 pin cables. I?m not sure which I have, but like I said the system came with the ATA/66 controller card and the 20GB HD, and I added a Maxtor 80GB HD about 1.5 years ago, if that means anything. The way the tower is set up the I can't put both hard drives on the same IDE cable, so they are each on their own cable.

What?s my next move? Sorry for the long post, I?m in debt to all those who read down this far 🙂

I removed teh PCI IDE card and used the motherboards IDE, and I tried two different IDE cables, but it didn't help.
 
I also used the six floppy disks to get to windows setup, but it still froze on ?Examining 19470 MB Disk 0 at Id 2 on bus 0 on ultra??
 
And this is with the PCI IDE card (that had the drives attached to it) completely out of the machine?

If that's the case, then what happens if you put the drive into another computer as a secondary or slave drive? Will that machine boot? Can you get into XP on the other machine and run chkdsk (with the fix all errors option) and see what happens?

Yes, I took the Ultra ATA/66 card completely out of the machine and plugged the hard drives into the motherboard, but it didn't help.

The only other computer I have is a laptop, but maybe I can give it to a friend at work on Monday and have him try it on his machine and run chkdsk.

Also, I'm currently running the Drive Diagnostic Utility from Maxtor. We'll see if that comes up with anything.

This is so frustrating that it gets all the way to the windows setup screen but no further.

Edit: Maxtor Drive Diagnostic Utility detected no problems with the drives.
