the an unmountable boot volume error when booting windows xp on a XPS laptop.
can't even get into windows under any form of safe mode.
any help?
 
Sounds like you mucked with your partitions. STOP THAT! 🙂

What was the last thing you did before you rebooted?

Before you do anything drastic, try reseating your HD in the laptop. It may have been shocked loose and is not working correctly. Then try the rest.
 
yes, chkdsk /r and fixboot and fixmbr should fix it (although if it happened once it will probably happen again... soon) 🙂
