after some searching around at engadget.com, i found the link at http://conceitedsoftware.com/iphone/site/anysim11.html
I would not advise using the iphone.unlock.no method - which, incidently, is the method that I followed. But don't do it like I did it. You'll end up with a not-easily-upgradeable iPhone. The current best method is AnySIM111.

Besides, it's a lot easier to just hack a new 1.1.1 phone using the current method, than it is to downgrade the firmware, unlock and activate, migrate, update, and unlock and activate.
luv, as someone who has hacked their iPhone, I have to say that I am really happy with mine. It works well, life is good. You are on T-Mobile USA? Or someone else?

I actually think the unlock is pretty funny:
3.1 Slide to reach the emergency dial screen
3.2 enter *#307# and then press call
3.3 Delete the #*307# and then press 0. After that press the call button you are seeing and it will show you the answer/decline buttons.Click answer.
3.4 Press hold now and your phone will start ringing again
3.5 Press Dismiss and your phone will go into the contacts/dial screen
3.6 Press contacts from the bottom bar and add a contact
3.7 Add a contact with a random name and write in "Add newURL": prefs://1F [Thanks idutch for the idea!!]
3.8 Save it and click on the contact's homepage. this will take you straight into the setting menu of the iPhone, and you can take all the time to select a WIFI network!
3.9 Write down the IP address of the iPhone.
3.10 Once the wifi is working, do steps 3.2 ? 3.6 again.
3.11 Give it another name and this time add the address as : http://jailbreak.toc2rta.com/
3.12 Save the contact.
It might be more comfortable to have a nice GUI for unlocking, but it has to be said that the current method can't be beat for excitement and amusement. You'll definitely feel like you earned your iPhone following this procedure.
If you are going to unlock an iPhone, I would recommend getting one in the next two weeks. There's a rumor - which is likely true - that Apple is readying a new firmware to close this unlock method in the next few weeks. And they are fast at rolling out the new firmware to products in stores.

No, I don't think upgrading to 1.1.1 is worth it - among other T-Mobile Voicemail notifications stop working.
But if you are buying a 1.1.1 phone to unlock, it's a lot easier to just unlock 1.1.1 than it is to downgrade it and unlock it. At least in my opinion.
No, I never could get YouTube, or Yahoo Push Email to work on T-Zones. I ended up upgrading to the Unlimited Internet ($20/month) plan and now both work fine - and Edge is much faster.

Yes, you can just walk in to either an Apple or AT&T store and pay and leave without signing or agreeing to anything. You can also order it online from Apple.com. It will definitely have 1.1.1 on it - at least until 1.1.2 is released. You can just follow the unlock instructions and stick in a T-Mobile SIM.
Every funtion of the iPhone works with two exceptions: visual voicemail is an AT&T feature and isn't available on T-Mobile. And on 1.0.2 voicemail notification (ie.you have voicemail) has reset issues (easy workaround), and on 1.1.1 voicemail notifications don't work at all (you never get an icon indicating voicemail has been received).
Other than that everything works fine - I wrote all of this on my 1.0.2 iPhone on EDGE on T-Mobile.

Yeah. I've gotten pretty good at typing on the thing. No matter what iPhone enthusiasts say, I think that they keyboard on the iPhone is not that easy to type on. But for websites, you can flip the screen sideways and use the keyboard and have it spread across the full 3" of the screen and then it goes pretty well. I've had plenty of practice now. 🙂
I'm on EDGE right now on my phone. I just clicked a random YouTube video - a baby laughing - and it took about 17 seconds from when I clicked it for it to start playing.
As far as speed - well, according to iphonespeedtest.com and iphonenetworktest.com, it's 125kbps and 143kbs respectively - which is about the same as it was on the $6/month plan - but it feels much faster. The latency is much, much better. I don't know of a good way to test it, but I can tell you that surfing on the $6/month connection worked... but not very well, but it's actually reasonable to surf the web on the $20/month plan. I would take 15-20 seconds to load up Slashdot.org before, and now it takes... about 8 seconds, I just tested it. 8 seconds isn't great, but it's much better than it was before.
