Unlocking my Athlon XP 2100

Did a search, couldn't find anything.

Yes I am attempting to unlock my Athlon XP 2100 tonight. First it was a case of cleaning about 10 tons of dust from my CPU and heatsink, but I figured I would go for it.

Has anyone done this before? Any tips or pointers? I think what I need to do is fill the pits on the L1 row with crayon and bridge the gold dots together with conductive paint (rear window de-fogger repair kit). Is this accurate?

Hopefully I will be looking to a E6300 for Christmas, but until then I plan to pump a few more years out of this girly machine while it tries to run 2005/6/7 games at minimal settings.

The reason I pulled it all apart was the CPU consistently held around 50+c which was ridiculous considering it was stock speed with a huge TT on it. Apparently dust thick enough to look like packed dirt and almost no thermal paste makes your CPU heat up a lot! Guess I should have taken a look at it when my friend gave it to me.

Have you tried changing the CPU multi in the BIOS yet?

If so, what happened?

I thought those chips were all built b4 AMD started hard locking in 2003.

if the processor is old enough you will need to fill the pits on the L1 bridge and then with either conductive ink or rear window defogger grid repair paint will work also

Note: if you have a Palomino, you're going to need sub-zero cooling to overclock it very far. Here's a link for you: Anand's XP mod guide. It's now the only XP pin mod guide left on the internet, it seems. Too bad you didn't do this at least a year ago.

That's a TBird/Duron overclock guide. I am using an XP 2100.

Last night I tried unlocking via the L1 bridges. After doing all the work, I booted my computer and attempted to change the multi (doesn't go over 13 and won't go under 13) and the computer wouldn't boot again until I reset the CMOS. I tried adjusting the FSB then. Once I put it around 137 it would instantly reset itself, so I increased the voltage from 1.750 to 1.7750 in the BIOS and once again, I need to reset the CMOS.

My board is an MSI NForce2 K7N2 and this thing hates anything I try on it. I am going to try and update the BIOS later tonight and try this again.

In good news, I removed what I suspect is a few years worth of dust from the HSF which had to be scraped off with a screwdriver and it lowered my core temp by about 5C.

If anyone has actual first-hand experience at doing this successfuly please post a reply or PM me. There is close to no information online that can be found and it's all rather vague at best.

Once upon a time, I had an 1800+, and nothing I did would get it to overclock in the slightest. Not even a 3mhz bump on the FSB was stable. It might be tricky to get your CPU to produce any more juice at this point.

My 2100 TB is unocked but the best boost I got was from upping the FSB,
from 133 (stock) to 188. If heat gets to be an issue then get a TT volcano
12 (around $22@ E-wiz), it can cool any Skt. A chip. What is the speed of the
DDR you are useing??
