Unlocking Cell Phones

I am looking to purchase a new cell phone because my current one is about to die on me. Is there anyway to unlock cell phones without having to pay for it. I dont mind paying a few dollars for it but these sites are charging like $15 and they seem kind of sketchy. If anyone has done it or has any useful links please post them here. By the way the phone I am looking at is the Motorola MPx200 Smartphone.

What do you mean by unlock it? Can't you buy it take it to your service provider and have them switch it over by this I mean change the esn on your acccount to your possibly new phones esn.

Highly depend on your particular phone model... Some phones you can unlock by simply typing in a code, and there are free calculators out there that will calculate the correct unlock code for you (eg. Nokia phones)...

However other phones you will actually have to flash the phone with a cable to unlock (eg. Sony Ericcson phones)...

From what I read, the Motorola ones can be unlock by simply typing in a code... however I have not been able to find a free calculator to calculate the unlock codes...

Contact your network. Once your contract has expired, they should give you the code, either free or charge, or for a token fee.

You dont need cable to unlock sony phones. You're confusing the Seimens with Sony Erricson.
Sony's can be unlocked with the code T-mobile gives out.
