unlocking an iphone refurb phone -- whats the deal?

In the last two months, I have seen deals on ATT's website in which you can pick up a refurb 8gb iphone for $250. From what I read, the point is to buy it, not get ATT's service, unlock it, and use a different sim card or something. Can someone explain to me why this is good, and how it affects your monthly bill, and data usage, etc. I just want to understand this a bit more.
 
It's good for some people if, for example, they are stuck in a T-Mobile contract? Also, I think some people get this uncommon $5.99 per month "T-Zones" or something plan on T-mobile which gives them unlimited data. This is cheaper than paying AT&T say, $20+ per month for data.

There's a new refurb sale that just started TODAY for 8GB iPhones for $249.99, or 16GB iPhones for $349.99 direct from AT&T refurbs.
 
Yea.. from what I've read. The T-Zones hack sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I would go with Tmobile if you already have service with them, or their service is better than AT&T's in your area. If not, then I would stick with AT&T. Tmobile isn't cheaper if you can't get the T-Zones hack working.
 
I thought some people were using T-Mobile Prepaid for cell phone and their own wi-fi hotspots to reduce costs.

I also read you can actually use one without any sim card (I was thinking about this because it just seems a better quality product than the iPod Touch).
 
has anyone actually gotten T-Zones to work with the iphone and t-Mobile? what do u get out of it? unlimited internet? youtube?

what do u mean by cheap variety? whats the diff between the tzones plan and the regular $20 or $30 internet plan?

Just meant in terms of pricing. You get the same internet, but it's the one meant for phones that don't use much bandwidth, so like the Razr's etc...
 
Wow, that was actually pretty easy. Pwnage is definitely the way to go since its completely reversible and very easy to do.
 
My tzones hack works, but it's slow, I get 444 kps WiFi, 45-125 kps with the hack.

My employer provides unfiltered WiFi, so I rarely need the bandwith normally and I'm cheap

$5.99 for internet access vs @19.99

1200 minutes on a family plan with my faves out of contract for $79.99 + $5.99 versus $80/month for just the iPhone from ATT with a 2 year contract.

iPhone for $249 no contract versus $500 for a 2 year contract?
