Unlocking a Motorola T720 GSM? (help)

Hi, a friend of mine acquired a Motorola T720 GSM cel phone for me some weeks ago under the assumption that his buddy could unlock it easily "Because he knows how to do this stuff". Anyways sadly this is not the case and I've got a cellular phone that I can't use because it is locked to another carrier. I've seen a few auctions on ebay saying that for forty or someodd dollars, someone can send me a special code that will unlock the phone for me - but I think that I'm really being taken for a ride, because the seller probably punches the IMEI into a little app and pops out a code. So anyways, I was wondering if any of you kind AT forum members could make my day and give me some information as to how to get this telephone unlocked. I would really, really appreciate it. Thank you.

You're better off getting the T730 from Verizon (the T720 with the bugs worked out), brand new and legally, and signing up for service through them for less than $75.

I signed up for the boards there, but the rules specifically disallow asking about unlocking phones, and refer you to their "marketplace" - looking to avoid that.

I'm in Canada, and my current provider (Fido) uses GSM. From what I hear the firmware of the T720 can be updated to eliminate most of the screwups. IANAL, but I don't think unlocking a phone is illegal. The T730 is nice though, i wish i could mod a '20 to look like that.

Are you sure the phone doens't pick up any other networks automatically? My T720 finds AT&T, Cingular, and T-Mobile when I hit the network selection.

Otherwise, the only real way to unlock these phones is to get a SIM card for a particular provider that you want.

Oh the problem is not the actual "reception" of networks, I'm able to see both major GSM Networks in my region perfectly, but the phone is locked to Rogers AT&T Wireless and I want to use it with my Fido (Microcell) SIM. It is possible to unlock these phones so that they can be used on different networks, it's just a matter of getting the unlock code, or reprogramming the phone with a data cable/software, but I don't have the required tools.

man, that board doesn't have much useful info, mostly a bunch of people asking how to unlock their cells with nobody answering..
