Unlocked XP or not?!!

Alright, I'm not completely new to overclocking, but I don't know WTF is going on. I have an ABit KG7 RAID and an XP1900+. This morning I tore it down to unlock the chip, which I attempted with a rear window defogger kit. It seemed to go well and I didn't fry the chip, which is a good thing, but I can't get the multiplier to go any higher than 12. I can get it to go lower and it will adjust my speed in Sandra accordingly. I know I'm not supposed to get it higher than 12.5 with the L10 bridge open.

Anyway, is it possible to clock-down a locked CPU? I want to know if this my chip is in fact unlocked, and I have to look to my motherboard or elsewhere to fix the problem, or if I have to take the chip back out, and retry. My BIOS has just been flashed and it's supposed to support XP2100+. Advise is very appreciated.

Secondary question: can/should I bridge the L10 bridge to get it to go 2200+ or higher?
Thanks

No, it is not possible to clock a locked cpu at all...up or down. If your BIOS is showing the speed increase, then you have unlocked the chip, although it may only be partially unlocked. I would suggest wiping the chip off with fingernail polish remover, and trying again. The first and second time I tried to unlock my 1600+, I could only get the even number multipliers (7,8,9,10,etc...) but no .5 increments. I finally got it right on the third try. You have to make absolutely certain that the pits are filled in entirely, that the gold connectors are not covered (with super glue, or whatever else you used), and that the defogger lines ARE NOT TOUCHING one another. When you get it right, you will have the run of multi's that your board supports...mine only goes to 12.5 (with an "Over 13" selection, I'm assuming for future chips/BIOS revisions). Good Luck!

This is what puzzles me. Like you, I am unable to access the ½ increments. I can get it to 1900+, 1700+ and 1500+ though, showing in both BIOS and Sandra. I was under the impression that a chip was either locked, or unlocked. I didn't know there was a 'partially locked' point. I have no cross-bridges but may have poor contact with a gold dot or two. Teardown time again. Thanks folks.

If you can drop multiplier down to say 11 or 11.5 then it is unlocked...It may be without a bios update to your mobo that it doesn't have multipplier support for this high...I have seen it!!!

Do not up multiplier!!! Drop multiplier and run up fsb. This is where the performance gain will be for you. The higher fsb will increase the memory bandwidth and allow you to run higher rated memory to its ability....

If it was me I would run 10x and 166fsb for 1660 at least...maybe 10.5 but it would require a vcore boost and that you have good cooling...

Now I'm confused. The default mult. on my chip is 12. I can't go up on my KG7. if I go down to 11.5, it says I have an XP1700+. it also shows 1700+ at mult. 11. The BIOS update I have says it'll support XP2200+ on down and I can choose these but it seems to be missing the ½ multipliers. I had none of this trouble with my T-bird. Do I have to try unlocking again, or is my motherboard being a b*tch? (there is still one more BIOS update, but it's currently unavailable)

Duvie: this board doesn't have the 5:1 divider and I don't really want to push my slots quite that high. Also, my Reg. ECC PC2100 won't go any higher than 150 stably. I water-cool so heat is not an issue. Thanks though.

If you can vary Multipliers but not the .5X increments then you have a problem with the leftmost, .5X Bit Value, L1 bridge. It is either not closed so the bios is unable to reset its default LO to an Enabling HI , or...its grounded and "permanently" set LO. Just fix/redo that one L1 bridge.

Edit:- Also be sure your conductive ink trace does not connect to any copper labels or icons like the triangle to the left of that L1 bridge as they are reported to be at ground level.

Thanks so much. I figured it was just one of the bridges that was wrong but I dind't know which one. I've been looking for that link but could not come across it for the life of me. I'm gonna try it one last time and make sure, doubly and tripply I get the job done right. All have been a great help.
