If it's not subsidized, why not just go with the Google edition S4 and go with ATT?

Verizon has much better coverage in a lot of areas.
Some people value service more.

And it might benefit those who want an S4, are off contract, but want to keep unlimited on Verizon. There are a few users in that category here on AnandTech just going by recent threads.

I'd be tempted if I still had unlimited on Verizon.
3GB on ATT goes by so quickly.

AT&T too, but that doesn't matter.

I wish they'd announced this a week ago. I'd prefer to support this option than to rely on a bootloader workaround on the most asshole carrier. Hmm, maybe I should just flip my S4.
Not sure why you'd assume that Samsung wouldn't do this...
Given the fact that you have to pay out of pocket for your unlimited plan anyway, I'm not sure why you were in such a rush to get the phone on day 1.

Enjoy your Verizon bloat ;)

Because if Samsung *didn't* do it, I might never get a chance to get one unlocked before Verizon closed djrbliss' exploit.

Anyway, it's still in transit from Amazon. Not sure whether to flip or keep (dev edition is only in black).

That's true. That happened with the HTC One X last year where HTC fixed the exploit about a month later.

Not sure what Amazon's policy is regarding this, but I would try to cancel and refuse shipment.

I like the white so I would keep. Plus you have to think, on Verizon you will be the odd duck not needing Loki. You might have to de-Loki-ize other Verizon ROMs for them to work.

Slightly OT, but what is Loki? I did a quick search and all I could find is some guy who got banned from XDA, I assume that is not it :D

I'd go with the developer version myself, as long as it isn't more expensive (subsidy is irrelevant since I can't use it anymore).

Loki is the wrapper that enacts the bootloader bypass necessary on VZ and AT&T non-developer models. It's a wonderfully clever exploit. Fortunately it's pretty easy from the user's POV -- you just have to remember whether your particular device needs Loki-ed or non-Lokied flash packages.
